Most of the bathrooms in our new build will have vanity cabinets made by the builder’s local cabinet maker. But, once I started getting bids for those, I realized there were a few spaces where we could save some money by ordering pre-made vanities. Once I factored in the cost of the cabinet then having to find slabs and add sinks, it turns out even some of the more designer-priced pre-made vanities were more cost effective! So, today I’m sharing some coastal vanities I considered, but also some tips for what I look for when sourcing a new bathroom vanity.

What to Look for When Selecting a Coastal Bathroom Vanity
How to Choose the Perfect Blend of Fresh, Functional, and Coastal Charm
One of the quickest ways to transform a bathroom, whether it’s a primary suite, guest bath, or powder room, is by choosing the right vanity. In coastal homes, the vanity becomes more than just a functional piece. It sets the tone for the entire space: light, airy, relaxed, and effortlessly beautiful. Over the years (and after more remodels than I can count!), I’ve learned exactly what makes a coastal bathroom vanity feel timeless, practical, and authentically coastal.
If you’re planning a bathroom refresh or a full renovation, here’s what you should keep in mind when selecting the perfect coastal vanity.
1. Choose a Light & Breezy Color Palette
Coastal style is all about creating a serene, spa-like vibe. Your vanity should reflect that.
Go-to coastal vanity colors:
- Soft whites (like Sherwin Williams Alabaster or Benjamin Moore Simply White)
- Warm, sandy neutrals
- Driftwood-inspired warm grays
- Soft blues or blue-greens (like BM Santorini Blue, BM Beach Glass, or SW Silver Strand)
Painted finishes are always a win, but don’t overlook natural wood tones. A light oak or whitewashed wood adds warmth without feeling heavy.

2. Look for Natural, Coastal-Inspired Materials
Materials play a huge role in achieving that relaxed coastal feel.
Great coastal vanity materials include:
- White oak (the unofficial wood of coastal interiors!)
- Rattan or cane accents
- Weathered, driftwood-inspired finishes
- Marble or marble-look countertops (Calacatta Gold or Carrara is a favorite around here!)
- Polished nickel or unlacquered brass hardware
The key is choosing materials that feel organic and timeless, not trendy or overly modern.

3. Prioritize Functionality (Because Bathrooms Need It)
Let’s be honest: a pretty vanity is great, but a functional vanity is everything.
Think about:
- Drawer configuration: Deep drawers are a game-changer for storing hair tools and taller items.
- Soft-close hardware: A small upgrade that makes your bathroom feel more high-end.
- Under-sink storage: Vital if your bathroom doesn’t have a linen closet.
- Integrated outlets: Perfect for keeping counters clean and cords hidden. The vanity we used below in our Omaha guest bathroom makeover had outlets integrated behind one of the doors in a hidden drawer along with a metal shelf for storing hot tools!
Take inventory of what you use daily—and make sure your vanity can hold it.

4. Don’t Forget Coastal Hardware + Fixtures
Even if your vanity is simple, the hardware can bring the coastal design home.
Top coastal choices:
- Polished nickel (classic coastal and pairs beautifully with warm whites)
- Unlacquered brass (adds warmth and ages gracefully)
- Matte black (for a modern-coastal edge)
Hardware can tie the whole room together – mirrors, sconces, towel hooks, everything.
5. Pay Attention to Scale: Proportion Matters
Coastal bathrooms are all about openness and breathing room. Make sure your vanity feels appropriately scaled.
A few rules of thumb:
- For double vanities, 60″–72″ typically feels the most balanced.
- For powder rooms, don’t go too bulky. A petite 24″–30″ vanity keeps the room feeling airy.
- Make sure the depth works for your space—too deep and it feels heavy, too shallow and you lose storage. We had to select a narrow depth option for our powder bath shown below to ensure a proper fit.
If your bathroom has tall ceilings, consider a vanity with legs or an open shelf to keep things visually light. Wallpaper is another great option that helps ground the space.

6. Incorporate Decorative Details Thoughtfully
A coastal vanity doesn’t need to scream “beachy.” It should whisper it.
Subtle details make the biggest impact:
- Reeded or grooved doors
- Cane inserts
- Soft curves or shaker-style doors
- A lower slatted shelf for baskets or rolled towels
- Natural woven baskets
These small touches add texture and give your vanity depth without feeling theme-y.
7. Pair It With Coastal-Approved Mirrors & Lighting
Your vanity doesn’t live alone – its surrounding elements complete the coastal look.
Coastal pairings to consider:
- Arched or rectangular brass mirrors
- Rope-framed mirrors
- Polished nickel sconces
- Woven or rattan sconces for texture
- Soft linen roman shades nearby
Treat the vanity wall as your main vignette and give it the attention it deserves. I also have a post dedicated to coastal mirror ideas if you’re interested!

8. Always Visualize the Whole Space
Before ordering a coastal vanity, step back and imagine the entire bathroom: the floors, the wall color, the lighting, the tile, the accessories. A vanity should feel like part of a cohesive story.
Tip: create a quick mood board to make sure every element flows together seamlessly. I share tutorials on both moodboards and 3D renderings you may find helpful!
A coastal bathroom vanity should feel fresh, calming, and effortlessly stylish. With the right combination of color, materials, hardware, and functionality, it becomes a beautiful centerpiece that elevates your entire bathroom.
