What is a Battery Operated Sconce?
Battery-operated sconces are wall-mounted light fixtures that are powered by batteries instead of being hard-wired like a traditional light fixture. They are designed to provide convenient and portable lighting solutions without the need for complicated installations or access to electrical outlets. You may also find my post on Rechargeable Light Bulbs & Lamps handy if you like this concept.
They typically feature LED lights, which are energy-efficient and long-lasting, ensuring extended battery life. These sconces often come with various features such as adjustable brightness levels, motion sensors, and remote controls, allowing users to customize and control the lighting according to their preferences. They are particularly popular in situations where wiring is impractical or unavailable, such as rental homes, outdoor spaces, or areas prone to power outages. Some offer rechargeable battery solutions, whereas others use alkaline batteries, so be sure to check the specs on each fixture if you have a preference!
Battery-operated sconces are also an excellent alternative when you want a sconce in an exact location but may be limited due to lack of wiring already in place or a stud or other structural feature in the way. This is our current situation in our new build! I’ll share more on that in the next section.
The Search For A Battery Operated Sconce
In our laundry room in our new build, we made some slight modifications to the original plan. I have an image of the current state of the space below. Ignore all the holes in the drywall 😉
In the original plan, there was a window above what will be the sink area. However, since we closed in the covered deck to create a dining room and office for Kurtis, we sadly lost the window. But, it gave us the opportunity to have a shelf installed, as well as a hanging rod, which is something we really need and use on a regular basis! We realized just how much we love a rod in our current home where our washer and dryer are in a literal closet with no other space. Here’s a not-great-angle but you can see the rod installed and some of the Carrara tiles on the floor.
The ceilings on our main floor are 12′ high, so that leaves a lot of space above the cabinets and shelves. With that, I realized a sconce would look great above the shelf. However, electrical had already been run, and they were unwilling to make modifications at this point. So, I’ve decided to use a battery operated sconce! It will still function the same way, and will actually be a great option as a night light in this area since we’ll have a small butler’s pantry on the opposite wall. Below is a similar example. Since our ceilings are so much taller, I’ll definitely hang ours higher up, but it will be a great way to add some style and function to the space!
Top Picks for Battery Operated Sconces

How To Make Any Sconce Battery Operated
Did you know you can technically make any hardwired sconce out there battery operated? So, if you don’t love any of the styles above, you can create your own with virtually any sconce on the market. You essentially buy your favorite sconce, mount it to your wall, and then use puck lights to make it battery operated! There are a bunch of tutorials out there, so I won’t reinvent the wheel, but just wanted to mention that it is a possibility, and doesn’t take much work at all! Even more simple, use one of these battery-operated light bulbs!
