I’ve previously shared our plans for Kurtis’ moody navy blue and plaid home office plans with Ralph Lauren vibes. While his space is dark, mine will be the complete opposite end of the spectrum and will be light and bright and sunny! Today I’m sharing my classic coastal office design plans with you.

In our current home, my office is in the space that was designed to be the master bedroom. But we both prefer a second story bedroom, and it made much more sense for the room to be my office. However, with that, it’s created some disjointedness because we still use the adjoining bathroom and closet to get ready, but then sleep upstairs in one of the “kids” bedrooms. That also means my office currently doesn’t have a closet and quite honestly, it’s always a mess. One of the things we’re most excited about in the upcoming move is to truly have a dedicated bedroom and bathroom and for my office to have a closet so it has a chance to be clean once in a while.
Current Look At My Office and Bathroom
The space we’ll be using as my office was designed to be a mini master suite, for those that prefer their bedroom on the first floor. Our bedroom actually sits on top of my office, so the space I’ll be working in will be essentially the same footprint of the bedroom portion of our bedroom. The attached bathroom and closet is where you’ll find the biggest changes since the closet and bathroom in our bedroom are both much larger than the one attached to my office. It has what I consider to be a pretty small closet, and as mentioned above, the bathroom is about half of the size as ours upstairs. But it makes for the perfect office for me! Much like the space I use currently, it’s right off the entryway, which is perfect for dealing with packages and deliveries.
Here’s how my office looks currently. For some odd reason they had all the windows washed already, and holy cow it’s even brighter in here now. I don’t think we realized just how filthy they were – and now it means that all the stickers are gone! One thing to note: none of the walls have been painted yet in the house (it’s just primer). The trimwork is all done, but I believe they’re waiting to paint the walls until the HVAC is turned on and we’ve been waiting on our power hookup for weeks now :/

To the left of the door coming into the room is also the entrance to the adjoining bathroom and closet.

Off to the right of the vanity is a bathtub. The windows look out onto the side of Kurtis’ little workout garage so I’ve talked to the landscaper about installing a diamond-shaped trellis wire along the side so I can grow jasmine there!

It’s been a bit since the floors in the bathroom have been uncovered, and I’m just praying they faded over time as the tile store said they would as they were drying. You can read more about this little drama in this post. I did pull back a corner of the paper this morning and I think it does look slightly better but I’m still seeing several of the orange pieces that really stood out previously. Thankfully the darker areas seem to have faded a bit.

Looking to the left of the vanity is the shower. Not sure why this bathroom had so many issues, but the tile store mistakenly ordered taupe tile for this shower and sent along the matching grout. When it was delivered, I knew immediately it was the wrong tile. So they ordered the new one but forgot to send the correct grout so the tile installer used the taupe grout that was initially sent. Long story short, it looks so bad. Like SO bad. I met with the tile installers and they said they could use grout paint and remedy the situation so I was open to that. Long story short, they started the process but then painters came in along with a whole host of other tradesmen and they haven’t finished the process yet. So it honestly looks like whiteout on the grout right now (and you can still see some of the taupe grout peeking out in spots. They have some serious work to do here. Ha!

Here is the view looking from back by the vanity into the office space. The closet is on the left and the water closet is on the right. I did a pocket door to separate the bathroom from the office area (they had a barn door on the plans) because I didn’t want to lose a wall in the office with the barn door.

Classic Coastal Office Design Plans
I think you’ll be able to tell fairly quickly that my office design board is very similar to our classic coastal bedroom and bathroom design boards.
The design first started with this desk. Initially I rejected it because I thought it wasn’t deep enough, but I loved the wood and marble combo. After a lot of searching, I found this dining table and this dining table I thought could work nicely instead. Then for whatever reason, a few months later, I re-read the measurements of the desk and realized it’s about the same size as my current desk which definitely isn’t too small. So, I went back to the original plan (especially excited for a few drawers which my current desk does not have).
I actually had the design boards ready to share but without any art. Then I saw this “Morning Mist” canvas wall art and “Water’s Edge” canvas wall art that Lindsay Letters just released and I think they may be perfect to inject some color in the space! I’m now just trying to decide between smaller versions of the pair or using one in the largest size.

You may have noticed in the last few sets of design boards, I’ve wavered back and forth on using these roman shades or these roman shades. We ultimately decided this past weekend to go with the former option. It’s what we currently have in our home, and they were super easy to install. We have a few automated that we love, and we just needed to get something ordered so they arrive in time! We only ordered the “essential” ones that we’ll want to install before we move in, so I may still try the Amazon ones in other spaces!
I have a pretty fierce coffee table book collection and it is heavy. So I opted to order this bookcase again (I currently have the blue version), because I know it’s substantial enough to handle the weight. I then love to display some of my coral and seashells on the top, and hide all my photography equipment on the bottom behind the doors!

In our current home, I have two desks in my office because Kurtis thought he’d be on his computer in my office with me until he moved to his office for work (much like he did for a few years in Omaha). But I don’t think even one time did he bring his laptop in. Instead, he’d sit in this chair in the corner because he said it was comfier. So in planning the new office, I knew we didn’t want a shared workspace. But when he comes in to meet with me for various items, we’ll now have more space for a sofa (yes, we’re using the same one because we love it so much)! Not only that, the cats love our current sofas and now they perch here and watch all the activity outside my window each day. They don’t really have anywhere inside to do that right now!

We’ll also have a Frame TV in the space. Not because I’ll use it when I’m working (I prefer silence) but rather this will also serve as a secondary TV spot in the evenings since we’ll already have a sofa in here. I may need to do a specific post just on coastal media cabinets. It’s tough to find good ones that fit various size and style requirements! I ordered this one for our carriage house but I’m still on the hunt for one in this space! This light wood option is a contender since it arrives on time and would give me a little bit of extra covered storage.
At some point, I’d love to add a woven wallpaper to the walls to bring in some texture, but that will be down the road!
Classic Coastal Bathroom Design Plans
Moving on to the bathroom design for my office space! The footprint is small but the layout is designed such that it can still fit a shower, large vanity and tub. The most challenging part of the design was figuring out how to make it all look symmetrical because of the glass enclosure and pony wall that butt up to the left side of the vanity. I had to find very narrow mirrors that could still be centered over the sinks. But then left an odd, larger gap in the center of the vanity.
Ultimately I decided single sconces on each end and a double scone in the middle made the most sense. I’m not sure it’s still going to be 100% perfect, but should be close enough! Last minute, I decided to use this lantern over the tub (which is a smaller version of our kitchen island pendants) because I found an open box one that was marked down so heavily it was a no-brainer.

That wraps up this round of design plans. It’s hard to believe that in about a month from now, I’ll be working in this new space!

I love this color palette. Would you do a post with design options for those of us forced to use a shower curtain?
Thank you so much! I actually opted to do a shower curtain in another bathroom, so I can definitely share more once I get that one figured out. I actually prefer shower curtains when a tub is involved. Our builder tried to talk me into glass doors there but in the past I always found those much more difficult to keep clean. I’ll share what we end up doing curtain-wise!
