Home Projects & Updates
If you read my post on Friday, you may have heard about the issue at one of our rental properties. One of our tenants left town over the holidays and turned the heat off in the house, and with the temps we’ve had, the pipes burst, the house flooded, and we didn’t know for several days. It wasn’t until the entire exterior of the house was covered in icicles before a neighbor realized something was wrong and called the water company. Here’s a peek at just the side of the house, but the front of the house looks the same. So much water was coming out through the floorboards, that the entire mid-section of the house was covered in huge icicles once temps dropped again and froze. I haven’t been over, but Kurtis guesses that more than half the house was sitting in water for several days. We were able to get a restoration crew in quickly, and although I’m not sure how far they got, at least the ball is moving forward to assess the damages and what we’re in for. Some of you may remember, about 3 years ago, we gutted the entire house and fully renovated it, so it’s a bit disheartening to even consider going down that path again. But again, we’re thankful both sides are insured and we’re just taking it one day at a time!
With that, last week didn’t go as planned at all! But I did manage to finally start taking down some of our Christmas decor. I’d say I’m about 50% of the way finished, but I feel good about having the trees and garland down!
My goal early this week is to get the plaid rug pulled from the dining room. That task obviously requires Kurtis’ assistance, but that’s the last “big” item and the rest should go pretty quickly! The house is feeling really bare, but I wanted to get everything put away before I started redecorating again! I still love these tree bags so much! They even fit my 9′ tree easily. Kurtis actually then added a few nails to some of the 2×4’s in our basement (which is all unfinished), so we now have all three bags stacked vertically up the wall, hanging from the handles. It saves so much floor space that way!
In other news around our house, in mid-December, we noticed an issue with one of the seams on the countertop in our pool house. It was after a few days of extreme cold (which may or may not have had anything to do with it). Here you can see how it looks. It was pretty obvious, and the exposed edge was pretty sharp since this is a natural stone (White Macaubas Quartzite).
Here you can see the other profile where one slab clearly shifted. CKF was great and came out quickly to assess what was going on. Essentially, where they had to seam the two slabs is in an area with very little cabinet support (it’s over the corner lazy susan). But, with how the countertop extends outside on the left side, there weren’t other options. Long story short, they came out last week and were able to fully repair it by placing a heavy-duty L-bracket in the cabinet with the lazy susan and attach it to the side cabinet and the countertop.
Although I didn’t take an “after” picture, it seemed to do the trick! They then refilled the seam, and polished it all back together. It’s good as new now! I just thought that may be helpful in case any of you have had a similar issue. Ours is somewhat unique because the temperature difference is fairly extreme between the portion outside and the portion inside. But, it’s definitely repairable, and doesn’t look much different than day 1!

Around Town & For Fun
With this past week being week one of eating right and doing Dry January, we basically didn’t leave the house! We tried some new recipes, none of which we really loved. But with the weather being so cold, we really didn’t mind staying home and cooking!
The cats never get sad when we’re home 24/7 every day of the week 😉 This next scene is a pretty common occurrence over here in the winter. They all want to be touching the pom blankets at all times (we now have FOUR). But Hawkeye always wants the one someone else is using so with Bailey, his trick to let her cuddle is to start cleaning her. It usually works!

You know it’s cold when Henley lets Hawkeye get this close to her without freaking out!
Last week, I shared some sale items and re-stocks from around home. Over the weekend though, I noticed our faux cherry blossoms are also finally back in stock! They’re so pretty for late winter and early spring! They are sold as a set of three stems for about half the price of one Pottery Barn stems. I have two sets shown below in this urn (which is also finally restocked)!

Assuming we don’t have another chaotic week next week, my plan is to share some exciting news on our next big project. I’m so excited to share it with all of you!
I’ve also made a few round-ups from stores I haven’t featured in awhile with some cute looks for less, so I’m hoping to get those up this week, as well! But this buffet table is one of the most incredible looks for less I’ve found in awhile! I want to share it now, because I know it’s going to be a popular one! The designer version can be found at a bunch of boutiques and Wayfair, but runs $3-4k!
