To me, fall is about all things cozy. And I think that holds even more true this year now that we’re home so much more! I always try to hold on to summer for as long as possible, but after Labor Day and my birthday roll around, I’m ready to start decorating for fall. Today I’m sharing some of my tentative plans for this year’s fall decor along with my 2020 fall design boards! At the end of this post, I’ll also be sharing some additional fall decorating ideas!

2020 Fall Design Boards
Although I won’t start decorating for about a month, I find it helpful to visualize each space ahead of time to see what works together and what doesn’t. It also helps me to take inventory of what I already have and limits spending when I ultimately start shopping. If you’re interested in making your own seasonal mood boards, be sure to also check out my post on how to make a mood board for interior design or fashion collages.
I’ve mentioned this before, but this chunky kit throw blanket was the kick-off I needed to inspire this year’s updates. I love this shade of green and ultimately decided that is the color palette I’ll be going with this year. You may still see some deep blues mixed in, as well! So, let’s get to each of the spaces.
Fall Entryway Decorating Ideas
The entryway is one of the few places I’ll still be keeping a lot of blue tones. I’m thinking I’ll pull this plaid rug out of storage that I used a few years ago for Christmas! I think it could work just as well in the fall months so it will be fun to change it up. Especially since I don’t think I’ve ever used it with our lighter blue front door (only when it was Hale Navy). I also ran across all these paint dipped vase versions (I already own the white one from the same brand) and love the variety of new colors! They are on the expensive side, so could also be done as a DIY if you found the right vase. And I’ve owned these faux olive stems for a few years and keep adding to my collection because they’re by far my favorite! You’ll see them popping up in several more of the boards below!
FALL ENTRYWAY SOURCES: Plaid Rug | Lantern Pendant Chandelier | Striped Wood Cabinet | Olive Topiary | Coral Mirror | Pillowtop Bench | Block Print Pillow | Linen Pillow Cover | Raffia Console Table | Paint Dipped Vase | Faux Olive Stems | Wood Bowl | Stools | Round Mirror | Swing Arm Sconces | Door Color: Benjamin Moore Water’s Edge | Wall/Trim Color: Benjamin Moore Simply White
Fall Living Room Decorating Ideas
If you watched my Instagram Stories earlier this week, you may have seen I swung into one of my favorite local stores, Amethyst Home. I picked up a few of their one-of-a-kind vintage pillows because I think they’re the perfect texture and colors for fall. I think I’ll be pairing them with a few pillows I found on Etsy (like this one and this one). I also brought in the faux cypress tree I got from Amethyst a few years ago and love it in our living room for the fall and winter months!
FALL LIVING ROOM DESIGN BOARD SOURCES: Linen Sofa | Spindle Chair (similar here) | Raffia Coffee Table | Black Credenza Table | Lamps | Gallery Wall Frames (similar here) | Chunky Knit Throw Blanket | Ivory Graphic Block Pillow | Dark Sage Pillow | Vintage Pillow Covers | Faux Olive Stems | Artisan Vase | Wood Chain Decor | Cypress Tree (old) – from Amethyst Home
Fall Kitchen Decorating Ideas
Per usual, I don’t change much seasonally in our kitchen. It usually involves swapping out some faux greenery and not much else! I did find this handmade wood cookbook holder that coordinates with our wood serving boards and I’m kind of obsessed! I’m hoping for a big sale in the future so I can snag one!
FALL KITCHEN DESIGN BOARD SOURCES: White Dutch Oven | Handmade Wood Cookbook Holder (affordable option here) | Basket Pendant Light | Natural Wood Board | White Wood Board | Wood Bowl | Dried Artichokes | Runner Rug | Faux Olive Stems | Artisan Vase | Cabinet Bin Pull | Cabinet Knob | Bistro Counter Stool | Paint Colors: Benjamin Moore Providence Blue & Simply White
Fall Dining Room Decorating Ideas
I’m hoping to finally share our updated dining room in our fall home tour. It just kind of got away from me over the summer months! But I’m keeping it really simple for fall, to allow the focus to be on any tablescapes I create! Sometimes swapping out something as simple as your napkins (like this cute windowpane plaid napkin option) can make the space feel much more season appropriate! I’ve had these dark wood chargers for a few years now, and I always love the contrast on our light wood table. They’re an investment, but I also timeless and something you’ll find yourself reaching for year after year!
DINING ROOM DESIGN BOARD SOURCES: Dining Table | Cane Dining Chairs (knock-off version here) | Velvet Linen Pillow Covers | Striped Rug | Buffet Table | Chandelier (knock-off version here) | Abstract Art | Faux Olive Tree | Seagrass Basket | Mirror | Windowpane Plaid Napkins | Wood Charger | Paint Dipped Vase | Faux Olive Stems
Fall Master Bedroom Decorating Ideas
I’m kind of digging the idea of adding some contrast and black objects to our spaces this fall. I’ve seen this vase in person and it’s so beautiful so I think it could be a fun baby step! Filled with faux olive stems, I think it would be even more beautiful! And I love that these pillow covers are velvet on one side and linen on the other (and they come in tones of colors)! You can never go wrong with velvet pillows in the fall and winter! And since my faux olive tree has been in our bedroom since last fall, I don’t have many updates to make in here 😉
FALL MASTER BEDROOM DESIGN BOARD SOURCES: Upholstered Bed | Cane Nightstands | Bead Chandelier | Velvet Linen Pillow Covers | Manzanita Branch | Jute Rug | Dresser Lamp | Nightstand Lamps | Gallery Wall Frames | Faux Olive Tree | Woven Basket | Striped Curtains | Bench | Dresser | Round Grid Mirror | Black Ceramic Vase | Faux Olive Stems
Fall Guest Bedroom Decorating Ideas
Consider me immediately on the hunt for a look for less option this gorgeous velvet bedding & shams! I can’t stop thinking about the stunning color or design. So good! It looks so pretty with these Hyde Park pillow shams. I’m also thinking this printed canvas could be a pretty and affordable alternative to our abstract beach art for the fall and winter months! It’s in the same line and comes in a bunch of size options. I told you I was taken all this olive green business seriously!
FALL LARGE GUEST BEDROOM DESIGN BOARD SOURCES: Upholstered Bed | Bead Chandelier | Striped Rug | Velvet Bedding & Shams | Hyde Park Pillow Shams | Raffia Nightstands | White Ceramic Lamps (come as a set of two) | Faux Olive Tree | Woven Basket | Mirrors | Cane Chair | Velvet Linen Pillow Cover | Canvas Art
Fall Guest Bedroom Decorating Ideas
Guys, I am determined to get our smaller guest bedroom put back together for fall. As you may recall, Kurtis has been using it as his home office, and still will be for the foreseeable future. So, I rarely go in there, but at night when I walk by it drives me crazy how much of a disarray it’s in. I’m pretty sure I haven’t even photographed it properly for a year+. So I’m saying that this fall is it! I still have a few things to figure out in here, but stay tuned!
FALL SMALL GUEST BEDROOM MOOD BOARD SOURCES: Cane Bed | Hand-Knotted Rug | Bead Chandelier | Linen Drapes | Curtain Rod | Bench | Lamp | Nightstand | Linen Pillows | Brown Velvet Lumbar Pillow | Paint Dipped Vase | Faux Olive Stems
Fall Den Decorating Ideas
The den is always a tricky one for me to decorate in any season other than summer. It just naturally feels like a summer space! But, because it really is just a bedroom and isn’t super spacious, it already feels cozy. I just need to swap up a few of the textiles, and I think it will be a great home for my new blanket ladder! I’m thinking these cozy teddy pillows could be a fun addition to the space and could be used all fall and winter and these affordable textured dash throw pillows are the perfect complement to them! And if you love recycled glass beads as much as I do for styling purposes, these white bone beads are a great options for the fall and winter months if you feel the glass is too summery!
FALL DEN DESIGN BOARD SOURCES: Sectional | Rug | Storage Coffee Table | Vase | Faux Olive Stems | White Bone Beads | Coffee Table Book | Scalloped Light Fixture | Rattan Mirror | Striped Ottomans | TV Stand | Cozy Teddy Pillows | Textured Dash Throw Pillows | Mohair Plaid Pom Pom Throw Blanket | Shutter Storage Cabinet | Blanket Ladder | Chunky Knit Throw Blanket
Fall Office Decorating Ideas
If you read this recent post, you know we’re in the process of slowly updating our home office a bit. So, I won’t be making tons of changes in here for fall, but will definitely update the faux greenery. I’m still on the hunt for some artwork that will tie everything together, but here are my plans for fall without any art.
HOME OFFICE DESIGN BOARD SOURCES: Rug (slate/ivory option) | Cane Cabinet | Wood Desks | Tufted Desk Chairs | Bookcases | Desk Lamps | Linear Chandelier | White Urn | Paint Dipped Vase | Faux Olive Stems
I hope you found some decorating ideas you loved in these fall design boards!

Great looks for fall, but so sad to see summer coming to an end.
How do you store your faux greenery when not in use to keep it from getting crushed and dusty?
Sarah says
I hear ya! I would love for it to be summer all year long! And as for storage, I have a giant basket I keep in a basement storage closet. I use it to store all my greenery stems upright and then just throw a sheet over it and that seems to work. I hope that helps!

I love your style. I want my master bedroom to reflect the look of your mood board for your small guest room. What color paint would you suggest for the walls? And any suggestions where I can find a similar rug at a lower cost?
Thanks!
Sarah says
Thank you so much! For our guest room, that board is for, we have BM Classic Gray on the walls (and then a white board and batten feature wall). But something like SW Agreeable Gray could be really pretty too! And there are some fairly similar affordable rugs in this post I did about our office! https://lifeonvirginiastreet.com/office-progress-affordable-neutral-rugs/

The tree in the living room picture is different than the link you provided. I would love a link to the tree in the picture if possible!
Sarah says
Sorry about that! It was a last minute swap and I forgot to update the link under the picture. But that tree is actually from Amethyst Home here in Omaha. I got the floor model a few years ago 🙂
