Multiple times in the past month or so, I’ve received comments (especially on Instagram), that some of my collages or home decor images are so “coastal grandmother”. I didn’t know whether or not to take it as a compliment or an insult because it was hard to gauge their context! But one commenter specifically asked if I had seen the “coastal grandmother” trend that was sweeping TikTok (starting with @lexnicoleta), and she said that my weekend sale collages reminded her of the vibe. After doing a quick Google search, I can 100% relate to the new coastal grandmother trend! Or, in my words, classic coastal chic. It’s a vibe that’s been around for years, it just now has a trendy title attached to it.
I actually started this post a few weeks ago, and since then, it seems like this trend is everywhere. So, if you hadn’t heard of it yet, I can pretty much promise you’ll start seeing a lot of it! Let’s dig into it a bit more. I also have some sale codes near the bottom of the post to save on this trend at several retailers!
What is the Coastal Grandmother Aesthetic?
If you’re familiar with the grandmillennial aesthetic, the new coastal grandmother aesthetic is very similar but with more of a coastal spin, and in my opinion, less fussy. Think Diane Keaton in “Something’s Gotta Give”. Or Meryl Streep in “It’s Complicated”. Ina Garten, Oprah and Martha Stewart also come to mind. Remember how we all wanted Diane Keaton’s coastal home and wanted to dress in her casual linens and neutrals, and relaxed but not-overly preppy coastal outfits? Think blues and white and neutrals and coastal (without the in-your-face-coastal themes) and you have the coastal grandmother aesthetic! Think coastal color palettes and natural fabrics, not coastal tchotchkes. Home cooked meals made from fresh produce you grew in your yard. Long dinners with friends filled with conversation and wine. Long hours spent reading a new or favorite book. It’s also basically the grandmillennial style without all the fuss, and almost a lifestyle instead! And you don’t have to actually be a grandmother to adopt this vibe! In fact, it’s a trend that’s sweeping all ages. It’s in the way you decorate, the clothes you wear, and the lifestyle you live. It’s basically everything I aspire to be.
