Summer Lovin’: The Courtyard Edition

Landscaping and Outdoor Spaces, Room Makeovers + Design Plans

This post could alternately be entitled: A Love Letter to My Courtyard. But I’ll try to keep it from getting too mushy.

The last few times I’ve shown the courtyard it was either early spring or early summer and I believe the latest post was after our makeover so all the plants were in infancy. Definitely not prime conditions for showcasing one of my favorite places on the planet. We knew when we bought the house this could be an amazing space {and it was one of the main reasons we purchased because it was so unique}. But now after having spent most of a summer with the space, it’s safe to say we are absolutely smitten.

I’ll apologize now {but I don’t really mean it} for the abundance of photos. I just love this space!

These first few photos are to help orient you as to the courtyard’s location. When we have visitors they never expect it to be located dead center {from front to back} and off to the right of the entryway.

My planters have really flourished in this area and have come a long ways since they were planted in May! They have done wonderfully with some Osmocote in the early spring and about a gallon of water each every other day. I swear the Osmocote is the secret weapon and my mom swears by it too!

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that it isn’t just quiet downtime we have spent out here. We have had morning breakfasts, morning coffees, and my husband’s favorite is reading the morning paper. I’ve also used it to layout on nice days and at night we have hosted neighbors and friends alike – and eaten a bag or two of roasted marshmallows and S’mores. We’ve also love our little herb garden and have used our fresh basil and dill in multiple dishes!

{this is the view out of my office – which also has sliding door access to the courtyard – notice I can always see what the husband is watching on TV}

We never got around to hanging the globe light strands to form a canopy of sorts, but will likely still do that next year. In the meantime, the firepit and new wall lanterns bring plenty of light to the space.

It’s safe to say, this is our own little retreat and we love the privacy and coziness provided but also the easy indoor and outdoor access. It also helps to bring the outdoors into all the room on our main level as well as the upstairs hallway.

We have had many conversations out in our courtyard, not just about the space itself, but about the fact how blessed we are for finding this house and actually owning it. We love the courtyard, love our neighbors and feel like we moved at the perfect time in our lives. And we feel this space will be equally as loved come fall.

Do you have a favorite retreat or gathering place? I’d love to see what space in your home ‘sold’ you so be sure to share a link in comments if you would like.

    Just stumbled onto your blog. Fantastic! I’m a fellow Nebraskan too…living in Lincoln.

    I want to know if your fire pit is a propane pit or wood. And where did you find it?

    Thanks.

      Thanks Robin! We got the firepit at Costco last spring – it’s propane and we LOVE it!

    I was hoping you would name the types of plants in the planter. The space is beautiful.

      Thank you! The planters have yucca (the tall spiky plants), impatiens and coleus. There are a few other random vines in the planter as well, but they don’t seem to thrive quite as much.
