Spray Painted Countertops

Have you ever thought about spray painted countertops?  I did exactly that and love them!

So, I did something crazy last weekend amidst all the paint fumes floating around our house. If you can’t tell from the title, I spray painted our laundry room counter tops. And totally love it.

But let me backtrack. I last showed you my laundry room design board here. This past weekend, my husband and I were at Home Depot buying extra paint to wrap up the striped guest bedroom. While there, I brainstormed ideas to take care of our dowdy reddish-brown countertops that were in our laundry room – that totally did not go with my overall decor plan.

The laundry room sink and countertop.

We briefly looked at the Rustoleum countertop refinishers which were cool, but came in around $99 a pop. Not gonna happen for this tiny sink {but would totally be worth the investment on a larger project}. And then, the heavens opened and we were right next to the spray paint. My husband was all for it because he figured I was probably going to replace the counterops regardless, so if he could salvage a few more years by spray painting in the interim, he was all for it. I found this Rustoleum Metallic Flat Soft Iron spray paint that also includes a primer. It’s a deep charcoal color with subtle metallic silver flecks – and primer is included? Perfect! I used Rustoleum metallic spray paint.

I taped of all cupboard areas within a wide radius to ensure the spray paint didn’t end up everywhere. But, I was planning to paint the walls bright white, per my plan, so I wasn’t as concerned there.

Taping up the cabinets in the laundry room with paper to protect them from the spray paint.

I did two coats and it worked like a dream! You would never know they were spray painted! It is hard to capture in photos {because this room is so poorly lit} but it has a nice sheen to the surface and is completely smooth. I’ll be sure to include more photos of the spray painted countertops after the full room reveal {it will be much easier to photograph at that point}. I also have a spot or two to touch up around the sink.

The brown countertop that was spray painted and a white sink in laundry room.

You can see I obviously got a start on the wall paint as well {Behr Swiss Coffee}. A perfect base for the “Seeing Stars” vinyl I’ll be adding. Here’s the before and during – which also shows the two versions of countertop.

Pretty sure I discovered that not only are my baseboard and trim pinkish-cream, so are the cabinets. AWESOME! Another painting project to plan… but at least I have a much better countertop to work with now!

**Disclaimer: We RARELY use this countertop and sink so I would not recommend this process for a high traffic area unless you have first tested durability on a test section. I should also note, the fumes were pretty bad, but it was a cool weekend and we were able to use fans and open the windows to circulate fresh air ASAP. Since I was dealing with such a small space, there was very little to paint. For our space, this painting process was perfect! We are well on our way to finalizing this inspiration board!

Awesome! We are getting ready to paint our laminate kitchen countertop. My first choice was Rusteoleum’s Transformations, as you mentioned. I read some negative reviews and changed my mind. People were complaining of the paint coming away from the countertop by sticking to the items placed on it. No thanks. Just thought I’d pass this along. I do love your spray paint idea. Just may have to do it. Thanks! 😀

Hi! I love the spray paint idea. How has it held up to wear?

It has actually held up very well. We don’t use the countertops a lot, however, there is no sign of chipping or wear yet!

Did you sand the countertops first? How has it held up now?

No, I just made sure they were really clean (and dry) first. They have actually held up incredibly well! We don’t have any chips or areas where the paint has come off!

Thank you for posting this…I was hoping someone had tried this. We are having our downstairs restored after flooding, and i think this will be a good quick fix instead of investing in a new countertop right now. Bonus: it is not currently installed while they are fixing walls, floors, etc, so I can paint it outside!
