It can feel so clean, minimal and uncluttered. However, after a few days, everything feels so bare to me! But, I actually feel like this is the easiest time of year to make some simple home decor changes to make your living spaces feel fresh and new. There’s something exciting about starting with a clean slate! Today I’m going to share some simple tips on how to transition decor from Christmas to winter and make your home still feel cozy after the holidays.

Our coastal inspired living room is still a little ways away from actually being complete. I need to do another coat of paint on the ceiling, then paint all the window trim, paint one final side of baseboard, and we need new window coverings. Until then, I’m making the most of our charming updated space and thought I would use this room for example purposes for my tips on transitioning your holiday decor. But, all of these ideas can be used on any room in your home! For reference, you can also check out our Christmas living room to see the decor differences. You’ll note that my updated decor has a mix of winter and spring and will make it all the more easy to transition from winter to spring without a major investment!
Side note: I also plan to write a detailed review of our slip-covered sofas and spindle chairs shortly!
Keep a Neutral Base
For a fresh feeling in the new year, stick to neutrals with one or two colors as ambient accents. Unless red is one of your core decor colors, it’s time to put it away for the season. By sticking with a neutral base, this will help evoke a feeling of serenity and calm. Which is always needed after the chaos of the holidays! This is one of the main reasons I’m loving our new furniture. But, if you don’t have a neutral base, using throws over furniture or updated throw pillows can help make your spaces feel new again.
Re-Use Holiday Greenery
There are several places in our home where I am re-using the fresh greenery I had out for Christmas. When winter greens are mixed with non-holiday colors, they can absolutely work without looking like Christmas is still lingering! I am a faux greenery hoarder, but I find my favorite stems at Hobby Lobby, Michael’s and Pottery Barn. These stems are a few years old from Hobby Lobby, but in a new vase, and paired with more spring-like colors, they look perfect for late winter! Deeper natural green tones help give the look of winter without leaning too much towards spring.
I re-used my wooden dough bowl filled with moss balls. However, I removed the gold ornaments from the holiday months. Now it just feels like a fresh update, with a nod towards spring!
Refresh Your Throw Pillows
You guys all know I’m obsessed with statement throw pillows. I feel like they are one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to change the look in any room. This winter, I opted to carry over the fig leaf pillows I used at Christmas-time and refresh them for winter/early spring with a few updated pieces. I like to find a few new pillow covers that can work just as easily with winter pieces as they can in the spring and summer. I recently added this wide stripe pillow and ticking stripe pillow to the mix when they were on major sale. I love that they can be used any season of the year, but they help make the space feel fresh and new for winter!
Add In Cozy Layers
I love using throws all year round, not only for practical purposes, but also for the color, pattern and homespun texture they can add to a space. I found these cute windowpane throws while grocery shopping the other day. The dangers of grocery shopping at Target, I suppose 😉 I love that they’re reversible and they have a cute gray banding. This pattern is one that would work just as well in fall, during the holidays, and later in the winter months, so it’s definitely a keeper!
Texture, Texture, Texture
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Varying rich textures are a great way to add a cozy vibe in any room.
As much as I love throw pillows, I may have an equal obsession with baskets. But, I love the texture and warmth natural baskets bring to any space. I love them filled with plants (real or faux like this faux fiddle leaf fig tree), blankets, throws, or even your favorite cold weather essentials. This line of natural baskets is a favorite. They’re a bit of an investment but are extremely sturdy and the perfect color tone.
I also love to re-use our velvet throw pillows from Christmas for some added texture. However, this year, I already had too many pillows to make it work. But, keep in mind velvet looks so pretty and cozy and can easily be used up until spring! You can also use chunky knits, woven fabrics and more to give the added texture to your spaces. Warm tones found in natural elements like seagrass, leather, faux furs, linen and wooden accents up the warm and cozy feeling as well!
Remember, you don’t have to buy all new items to transition season. Mix and match pieces from fall, Christmas, and spring to get a look you love. The overall effect will be one that will carry you into the cozy warmer months!
Now that we’re past the halfway point of January, it feels like spring is just a tiny bit closer! I hope you found this tips for how to transition decor from Christmas to winter helpful! Have a great weekend!

Do you love the spindle chairs? We are remodeling our lake house and they are high on the list for the family room.

I love the look of them! But, they were definitely very firm when we first got them. They’ve softened a bit so I’m hoping they do a bit more over time. We don’t sit in them that often since we’re mostly on the sofas, so I’m hoping to give a better review in the next month or so!

where did you get the moss balls in your dough bowl?

I honestly don’t remember 100% because I’ve had them a few years, but I think it was a combination of Gordman’s and Hobby Lobby!
