Courtyard Spring Refresh Plans

The first time walked through our home during a showing with our realtor, Kurtis knew he was in trouble the moment we stepped inside and saw the courtyard. To be honest, it was one of our all-time favorite features of the home and we loved the unique floorplan it provided. You can see a full courtyard tour in this post.

But, as we worked on updating our backyard last year, the courtyard sadly became neglected and rarely used. I still refreshed it with flowers and some new throw pillows, but we didn’t get much use out of this beloved little area of mine.

Since the courtyard is visible from nearly ever room on our main floor, thanks to the surrounding windows, it’s important it be maintained. Especially in the summer months. I absolutely love creating large flower planters and our herb garden in this space. But you’ll note most times, the only color in the space is from the flowers. The firepit furniture (from Costco a few years ago), the paint on our house, the faux stone wall and even the concrete all seem to blend together for a very monotone look.

Here’s how the space looked as of Sunday afternoon. Our DIY outdoor couch is about to get a new home at Jill and Nick’s house.

This year, I’m hoping to make the space feel much less beige and blah with a few simple changes. I’m partnering with Joss & Main in a few weeks for an Instagram giveaway (you’ll have the chance to win a $500 gift card), so I thought it was the perfect time to make a few changes to this space of ours. Here’s how I’m hoping to banish all the beige. I also wanted to be sure to share the design board and the reveal (in a few weeks) on the blog and not just Instagram.

The giant (9×12) outdoor striped rug is the biggest change for the space. It has so many good reviews and I felt like it was pretty affordable for the size. I’m hoping that by covering the gray concrete, I can help eliminate that monotone feeling rather quickly. I’ll be filling the planters (including that planter bowl) with herbs and these flowers, and the throw pillows should help brighten up the dark chair cushions. I’d eventually love to swap out the cushions on the chairs, but they are still in good shape and cushions aren’t exactly cheap. So, for now they stay! Nothing a few throw pillows can’t hide 😉 The white serving tray will sit on the table top when the fire isn’t in use to help brighten up all the dark colors. It’s a pretty basic refresh, but I’m excited to get started updating this space!
