Coastal Bedroom Ideas & Decorating Tips

A coastal bedroom should feel like a breath of fresh air—relaxed, refined, and inspired by the simplicity of life by the sea. With a thoughtful mix of light colors, natural textures, and oceanic accents, you can create a space that feels like a vacation every day. Whether you’re decorating a beach house or simply want to infuse your home with ocean-inspired charm, a few strategic design choices can help you achieve the breezy look. Here are some tips for decorating a coastal bedroom.

1. Start with a Soft, Neutral Base

Think sandy dunes and sun-bleached driftwood. Begin with a light foundation—white, ivory, pale beige, or soft gray—for walls, bedding, and large furniture pieces. This allows the space to feel open and sets the stage for layered textures and pops of color.

2. Incorporate Ocean-Inspired Colors

Blues and greens are classic for coastal bedrooms. Use a soft seafoam, aqua, navy, or sky blue in accent pillows, throws, art, or an upholstered headboard. These hues mimic the natural colors of the ocean and help create a relaxed atmosphere.

3. Use Natural Materials

Layer in textures that evoke the outdoors. Think rattan or wicker headboards, seagrass rugs, linen bedding, and driftwood accents. A jute rug or a woven light fixture instantly adds organic texture to the space.

4. Keep the Bedding Light and Breezy

Opt for crisp white sheets, lightweight quilts, or linen duvet covers. Layers in breathable fabrics not only look fresh but also mimic the effortless comfort of a seaside escape.

5. Add Coastal Artwork

Beach landscapes, watercolor ocean prints, or framed vintage maps of coastal towns work beautifully. Lean into artwork that’s calming and evokes the mood of the coast rather than overtly beach-themed signs or clichés.

6. Play with Coastal Patterns

Stripes, especially in blue and white, are a classic nod to nautical style. You can also try subtle coral, shell, or wave motifs in curtains or pillows—but keep it minimal to maintain a sophisticated feel.

7. Let the Light In

Maximize natural light with sheer curtains or light-filtering window treatments. If privacy isn’t a concern, opt for linen drapes or bamboo shades that diffuse sunlight without darkening the room.

8. Incorporate Coastal Accents

A few well-placed accessories—like a bowl of seashells, a stack of ocean-colored books, or a glass lamp with a woven base—bring personality without overwhelming the room. Less is more when it comes to coastal styling.

9. Consider Whitewashed or Weathered Furniture

A distressed white dresser or reclaimed wood nightstand helps reinforce the coastal aesthetic while adding character and charm.

10. Bring in a Bit of Greenery

Coastal style thrives on a connection to nature. Add a potted palm, a vase of clipped saw palms, or a small fern to introduce a fresh, organic touch. If you don’t have access to fresh palms, I used these stems in our carriage house recently and they’re a great option!

Now that you’ve seen my tips, let’s jump into some of my top furniture and decor picks for creating a serene, coastal bedroom!

COASTAL BEDS

The foundation of the room should start with the perfect coastal bed! Here are a few of my favorite finds.

COASTAL NIGHTSTANDS

Here are some of my favorite coastal nightstand finds. If you’re doing a colored bed, I love pairing that with a natural or wood toned nightstand.

COASTAL DRESSERS

These dressers work with a variety of decorating styles, but also work so well with a coastal bedroom aesthetic. We own both this dresser and this smaller version.

COASTAL RUGS

A rug in your bedroom is an easy way to incorporate additional pattern and color. Look for options made of natural materials like jute, cotton or wool in colors that remind you of the sand and sea!

COASTAL ACCESSORIES

A few coastal accessories here and there are the perfect way to wrap up your coastal bedroom! I prefer to keep them more classic and natural rather than kitschy beach vibes. Here are a few favorite finds.
