Travel Files: Alps Road Trip Recommendations

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Alpine Tourism Commission which is comprised of Austria, Germany and Switzerland for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

A few months ago, I shared our road trip journey through The Alps. As you may recall, we visited Austria and Germany as part of the trip but I also touched on Switzerland, as well.

Today I wanted to share an Absolutely Alps video that quickly demonstrates the beauty of the Alpine region. It’s pretty clear just how breathtaking this area really is! After watching the brief video, you should also check out the Absolutely Alps Grand Tour suggested itinerary. Kurtis and I quickly agreed it seems like a dream trip, as it hits all the Alpine highlights in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

I love that the Grand Tour itinerary is designed so that you can start at any given point on the map and take the journey through the Alps at your own pace. As we experienced first-hand, the roads are well-maintained and the region is so friendly and relaxed. The locals are welcoming and hospitable and every town just oozes charms. It only adds to the enjoyment of the beautiful cities and towns you visit. To truly see everything the Alps has to offer, I would recommend flying into Zurich and then ending your trip in Munich or vice versa. This will ensure you don’t miss any of the amazing stops along the way!

If you plan to do a roadtrip, I would recommend traveling May through September. We started our journey that last day or two of April and the snow had just melted enough in Austria for us to get through the pass in the mountains. The region would obviously be just as amazing and beautiful in the winter, but it may be more difficult if a road trip is top on your priority list!

I wish we had allowed more time during our trip to really explore the towns we were passing through. Each stop certainly warrants more than a one-day visit or pass-through. When we go back in the future, we will be sure to leave plenty of time to indulge in the local food and wine, festivals, and exploring the outdoors and local culture. Specifically, we’d love to add the following to our itinerary:

  • Fully explore Switzerland. By flying into Zurich, we’d take some time to explore the famously clean city and peruse everything it has to offer. Dinner at Quai 61 would be a must, with market fresh dishes and stunning views of the city.
  • We’d also love to visit the stunning lake town of Lucerne and hike in the nearby mountains. We’d also plan to do some shopping in their renowned stores. Kurtis would also demand to visit Stadtkeller, where Swiss folklore comes alive (and they serve smoked pork – his favorite) with live music.
  • We’d also plan to visit the Matterhorn and stay in Zermatt. We’d loved to eat at The Omnia, known for pure, authentic flavors in each seasonal dish. We’d obviously plan to gorge ourselves on Swiss cheeses as well.
  • A stop in Innsbruck, Austria would also be a must. Did you know its the only city to ever host the Olympic Winter Games three times?
  • We would love to see even more of Salzburg and Zell am See (the most gorgeous lake town). I could see us spending several days in this beautiful, outdoor town. You can also see 30 different mountain peaks that are over 10,000 feet high from Zell am See!
  • Kurtis would also really love to be in Munich during Oktoberfest! We’d also love to expore Munich on bike again like we did last time and visit more beer gardens. It’s such a charming city! Not only that, there’s nothing quite like German beer, sausages, chicken and pretzels!

The Alps hold such a special place in my heart because of the memories we created there on our last trip. We can’t wait to get back and explore the region even more!
