Our living room was one of the first spaces I painted after we moved in last winter. The furniture layout was kind of a no-brainer because the space is much smaller than our last living room – so things just sort of had a “space” in the new house. I pulled some decorations from boxes and called it a day with this little corner. And I haven’t really touched it since. Obviously. There’s way too much clutter.
The last few months I felt like the scale was off once in the new house. The smaller lamps and leaning mirror that worked in our last house didn’t seem to work as well here. Here is a shot of the layout at our last home. I think the board and batten breaking up the wall really helped to make it all work and not feel like there was such an expanse of empty wall.
If you follow me on Instagram, you saw that I brought some new lamps from HomeGoods into the space. And they completely dwarfed the old ones. But I also think they fit the space much better {they’ll ultimately be placed on the ends where the old ones were}.
Now, not only am I contemplating painting the walls in the living room area the Benjamin Moore Healing Aloe I used in our last house {I still have a gallon left}, I’m trying to determine what should be used to replace the mirror. At minimum, I need something at least 35″ wide. I’m leaning towards some beach art in the living room.
This past week I almost pulled the trigger on a piece of Thom Filicia art from his ‘Warm Memories’ collection. I LOVE the blurry, oversized beach shots. The series name is fitting as it reminds me of my childhood and of our love for travel. They were on a One Kings Lane sale, plus that particular day, you could get an additional 20% off your purchase. They still rang in around $400 each so I got a little gun shy. Here are some spaces that used this art.

Love the look, too? Here are even more options to help you achieve this look!
I prefer the one in the first three spaces above. So, cool or weird? If I don’t go this route with art, it would probably be an abstract with blues and greens. The other option is a different mirror but I’m not entirely sure that’s the route I want to go either as most oversized mirrors are rectangular like the one I already have.
Which route do you think I should go? Oversized mirror or art or neither? Maybe I could even incorporate some picture frame ledges like I discussed here? Wall color stay or go {it may be too much color without the board and batten to tone it down}? So many decisions!
P.S. Last chance for the fabric sale! Sale ends at midnight tonight.

Either, but I can see the appeal of the beach prints, it’s unique and definitley a great conversation starter. 🙂

I totally think that you should do the art piece (which I love, by the way). It looks like you already have a lot of light in that room so you don’t really need the mirror help create more. And that space looks kind of tucked away so what is the purpose of the mirror. The art, those lamps…perfection!

I think you should go with something personal…so my vote is to be an enabler and say you should do the beach photos. I toured that house and I have to tell you, those photos made the room…the room and entire house was exceptionally well done, but the photo made the room. I always think with art to make it personal and meaningful. If looking at this fuzzy photo evokes something in you, then go with it. Although, if you feel like you’re not going to spend that much, Ballard has some really great abstracts that would look great, but you may be heading toward that same price range. Love what you’ve done to the room. Scale is so important and so tricky. One of my biggest issues in our new house, too :/
