Year of Change: October’s Fabric Challenge

Decorating Ideas, Tips and Trends

I’m so excited for this month’s Year of Change project because all of the fabric goodies were provided to us by Tonic Living. And you know I’m a sucker for good fabric! I’m especially excited to see all the projects from my lovely ladies over at Suburban Bitches, Commona My House, Rosa Beltran Design and our guest blogger Krystine Edwards!

I decided to do something slightly different this month. You probably know I whip up throw pillows on a regular basis {using this easy tutorial}, so I didn’t want to do something predictable and only do pillows this month. Therefore, I opted to plan my project around a Thanksgiving tablescape. I selected the following fabrics:

Ming Dragon, Admiral {table runners}

Velvet, Indigo {throw pillow backs and side panels}

Monarch Trellis, Meadow {throw pillow face}

You should have seen the side-eye I got from my husband when I told him I was making a Thanksgiving table runner with a dragon print. The dots just weren’t connecting for him. But I knew the colors in this gorgeous fabric would compliment the rich, warm tones of the fall season and I think it worked out perfectly!

I kept the decor simple, using some mini-pumpkins and foliage from outside {two types of hydrangeas and a maple branch}. I am loving the twist I added on the throw pillows – using a two inch band of the material from the back down the sides on the front. I think this really helped the trellis pattern to pop against the head chairs. The indigo blue and meadow green are the perfect compliment to one another and I love the pair with the Ming Dragon. Velvets are not always easy to work with {at least for me} but I feel like this was not only easier to work with, but was a much higher quality look-wise than anything I could pick up at our local fabric stores. Not to mention, the color selection was much more modern and current. Definitely my go-to velvets in the future {as a bonus, you can buy pre-made pillows if you aren’t comfortable sewing it yourself}!

With the table runners, I simply ironed a “hem” so that I could use the fabric for other purposes {pillows, napkins, etc.} in the future, if I decided to do so. I would likely never allow food to be served on this fabric, but I also think there is nothing wrong with setting a beautiful table and then swapping things out and adding placemats once food is ready to be served. As a side note, if you’re a fan of the insanely expensive {albeit gorgeous} Chiang Mai Dragon fabrics, this is a phenomenal look-for-less at a fraction of the cost.

All three fabrics are absolutely gorgeous and I couldn’t be happier with how this turned out! Even if my husband is convinced dragons and Thanksgiving don’t go hand in hand. Men. What do they really know?!

Again, a huge thank you to Tonic Living for providing us with the gorgeous fabrics!

    Great use of the fabric; love that you can reuse the table runner. I was at Tonic Living today! I’ve ordered from them several times, but to go into the actual store is a treat. You get to see how vibrant the colours are and feel the texture, unlike viewing them on-line.

    I am going to whip up a few cushions this weekend with the fabrics I bought.
