Transitioning Your Throw Pillows for Fall

As a blogger, it seems like it’s the norm to decorate one season early in order to have posts ready for the coming season. Well, I managed to be a week early, so I consider it an accomplishment!

This past weekend, I made some new throw pillows to use in our living room for the coming fall months. I’m dreading the colder months {I’m such a summer girl} but I do love the change of seasons and the home decor changes that come along with each season.

I tend to keep things pretty much the same throughout our home, with the exception of swapping out a few basic items to fit the current season. During the fall months, I love warmer colors, richer fabrics {think velvets and cable-knit throws} and anything that feels warm and cozy.

Great tips and tricks on how to easily swap your throw pillows for fall!

Here’s my philosophy for swapping out throw pillow seasonally. Find a print that you can easily switch out (I opted to remove my main, floral fabric). Find one of similar scale that has different colors than your normal decorating scheme, but one that compliments your existing colors well so that you can use your existing basic/geometric pillows. Another helpful hint: be sure to add in texture! Fall is all about texture, warmth and coziness!

I used Schumacher’s Camberwell Vase in Citrine fabric, and made 22″ square pillows. I simply followed my throw pillow with a zipper tutorial. I had some deep brown velvet pillows that came with our couch and felt like they were a great compliment to the Schumacher print for the fall months. The Schumacher fabric is a bit more neutral than the floral fabric I use during the spring and summer months and features some deeper golds and browns that work well in the cooler months.

I switched out my summer floral pillows for darker, warmer color patterns.

These fall throw pillows are the perfect colors for fall. They aren't they typical warm toned browns and golds, and they look good in so many different decorating styles.

Another look at our fall throw pillow switch out. I love these warm tone browns, blues, and grays.

Brown stripes, a rich cocoa brown, and cool toned aqua are perfect hues for these fall throw pillows.

And for comparison purposes, here is the floral fabric used during the summer and spring months. Notice the brighter greens and aquas that have since been replaced for the autumn months.

Here are some of the more summery fabric patterns I used last season to brighten up the room.

Here’s a shot of all the fabrics together to show how they all work together. You can also see that regardless of the pairing, each grouping of three will play well off one another due to the scale and color scheme of each.

A look at all the fall pillows together - note how the color scheme works well together with warm browns, aquas, and golden colors and patterns. Not too overwhelming and perfect for the fall.

Although I am sad to see the cooler months approaching, I do love getting my hands on new fabrics and trying out different combos! Do you change out your pillows seasonally?

Such great tips, Sarah! I love the Schumacher fabric. The colors truly are perfect for fall and allow for a really nice transition without a lot of change. I can’t wait to try out your tutorial now, I have been terrified of the zipper pillow cover forever. I always stick with the envelope style but I have some fabric on the way and I’m definitely trying it out! Have a great weekend, friend!

You have such an eye for fabrics! I love the grey stripe pillow. Would you mind sharing where you picked that up?

Thank you! The stripe is actually a brownish gray. I got it from H&M Home for only like $5!

        Hi Sarah,

Your home is absolutely stunning. I love everything. Could you please tell me the name of the pattern of your summer floral print pillows? Thank you!

Thank you! That fabric is P. Kaufmann’s St. Thomas in the Parrot colorway.
