Something in our living room has been nagging at me for some time: the stone on the fireplace. Oh, and that ceiling fan, but that’s a post for another day.
It’s not that I don’t like the fireplace stone {although that sort of is true} I feel that the color tone is way too warm/orangish for this room and the colors I have decorated with. My husband and I have discussed multiple times about tearing off the stone and finishing it out with board and batten like the top or some other form of trim, along with some small tiles.
Recently, I’ve been wondering if I should just try painting it / white{or gray}-washing it. Not in a solid, opaque paint, but a watered down version so some of the variations in color still show through slightly. I figure I don’t have anything to lose, especially if we tear it off entirely down the road.
Although I wasn’t able to find any white/gray-washing photos of stone I did find some of brick. I LOVE this brick makeover from Amelia at Monograms ‘n Mud. It is stunning and you have to check out the before photos! I love how the finish is not flat and monochromatic – there is still some dept and texture left behind with the various shades in the original brick.

Anyone with experience with this type of thing? I may even try watering down the gray Annie Sloan chalk paint I used on the desk and table since I still have some left over. Is painting the stone a completely crazy move?
I say go for it! I think it would look great and if it doesn’t turn out well or you don’t like it… you could move onto something more labor intensive.
I’m with Karen, try it and if you hate it then rip it out. I actually don’t find the current stone offensive with your decor though. It is a peaceful and charming living room!
I say paint it!! I have never worked with chalk paint so I can’t speak to that, but I’m sure a quick google search would turn up some helpful hints. Can’t wait to see the results!!
