The 58 Week Guest Room Makeover & DIY Designer Pillows

DIY Projects, Room Makeovers + Design Plans

Unfortunately, that title isn’t a typo. After an incredibly productive weekend a few weeks back, I finally finished the Euro shams in our king guest bedroom. I completed the first one last year and it took me 58 weeks to finish the other two. For reals.

I really had no motivation to do this other than the fact I was cleaning out my craft room closet for the February Year of Change project and I saw the cut fabric for the pillows. That’s right – the fabric was already cut, I just didn’t take the extra 15 minutes per pillow to actually sew them up. For those that are new around here, I used my easy Throw Pillow with a Zipper Tutorial to polish these ones off as well.

This post contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience. You can read my full disclosure policy here.

The fabric for the Euro Shams is the most expensive fabric I’ve used before, Schumacher Chenonceau in Charcoal, but I found a great deal on a lot of yardage on eBay about a year and a half ago. The key to achieving high-end designer looks at a fraction of the price is to being willing to DIY some of the items yourself. Throw pillows are one of the easiest places to do this. Buy a yard of pricey fabric and make your own pillows {nearly 95% of the pillows in my home are designer fabric, but made by me}. If you aren’t an expert seamstress, practice on some cheap fabric until you feel up to the challenge. You really won’t regret it!

**Bonus – I will finally be doing a tutorial in the coming weeks on how I achieved those perfectly striped walls using FrogTape. I know a lot of you have asked for the specifics on achieving this look, so I will be delivering soon. Be on the lookout for the post soon!

And now, a glimpse at the room with the newly updated pillows.

Now, let’s all pretend we don’t see that one broken ray of sunshine. Apparently I didn’t find time to fix that little issue during my super-productive weekend.

And don’t forget: if you’re looking for some fabric for your home, be sure to check out this post. And with my Throw Pillow with a Zipper Tutorial you can follow along step by step to get a high-end look for a lot less!

So, have you sewn your own pillows before? Are you willing to give it a try?

What gorgeous fabric and such a great tip! This room is lovely–even if it look a while to complete. I have many rooms in my home that are a work in progress, and we’ve lived here 4 years 🙂

I love this room. I am trying to get fired up to redo my college daughter’s room and this is exactly what I’d love it to look like.

I do have a question…I never see ceiling fans in designer rooms. But my family loves the air fans provide. What is the solution?

    Thanks!

    From your neighbor in Lincoln!

Just pinned your tutorial! I’ve been wanting to sew my own throw pillows for a long time and your tutorial makes sewing with a zipper less intimidating. Thanks!

Thank you! It is from Target. There is actually a direct link to it under the image above if you’re interested in the specifics.

SO relieved to know I’m not the only one who takes forever to finish seemingly simple projects… What on earth happens sometimes?? I’m convinced I have selective diy ADD. And anything that involves sewing gets the worst of it, lol. You should be proud you finished all 3 pillows! And that fabric is so awesome! Such a good find. Now I feel like I should finish some of my projects too…hmmm…

Thanks for admitting that it took you forever! 🙂 It looks amazing, though. High-end fabric is SO worth it. Beautiful!

Love Love LOVE that fabric! I can see why it was worth it (think goodness for coupons!) They look stellar! I hate when little projects that are so quick end up taking so long… it’s like they’re taunting us! Haha!

Thank you for this! I’ve been looking for inspiration for my master bedroom and I love how yours looks complete without an overwhelming amount of pillows. Would you know the measurements of the two white pillows in front?
