“manly projects” weekend

DIY Projects, Room Makeovers + Design Plans

This weekend was time for the husband and his dad to do some manly projects together {i.e. things I would have no idea how to help him with and/or require a blowtorch}.  These are also known as un-fun projects in my mind, but the kind the husband loves!  It was also great to have his parents spend Father’s Day weekend with us.  They came into town on Friday night and we started some of the prep work.  The goal was to add a water faucet on the back exterior of our house {we only had them on the sides}, add a utility sink in the basement near the cat boxes, changes some lights switches {previously one switched turned on every single light in the basement so the guys re-wired so each room was separate}, change our bedroom door handle {sorry Hawkeye – no more breaking in every morning or when we are out of town} and add drywall to one of the framed walls down there.

Our basement never makes the blog.  That’s because previously, it was a vast wasteland of 1800 square feet of concrete, 2×4’s and drywall.  Here is a little tour pre-projects:

Saturday morning we were up bright and early to get to Lowe’s.  The guys spent the majority of the day in the basement, while my mother-in-law helped {okay mostly did all of} cleaning things I hate to do.  Like our utility sink in our laundry room that has had two years of paint caked on it.  It looks brand new!  She also cleaned my windows around the front door so you can actually see out of them and vacuumed our stairs.  I wrapped up some painting and made a new roman shade for the kitchen door {seen hanging on the counter}.  I love that we also have a “room” now in the basement, especially for tornado warnings and to sequester the kids into.

We polished off the night with a barbeque with the family, including husband’s sister and brother-in-law.  After much whining/arguing/etc. I conned the guys into moving our sectional in the bonus room to the main floor and the main floor couch and two small stairs up {more on that later, but essentially, the cats are destroying our new furniture and the leather is just so much firmer and hair repellent}.  I am still playing with new layouts.

Today after church and Father’s Day brunch at Le Peep the guys wrapped up a few things and I painted our island.  It is amazing how much work was done this weekend!  Four sets of hands are much better than two!  Thanks to the in-laws for all of your hard work and excellent weekend!
Happy Father’s Day to both of our amazing fathers!  We love you!
