Landscaping and Outdoor Spaces

Now that the weather is warmer, I automatically start thinking about our outdoor spaces. How soon can I start planting? When can I start eating breakfast outside? When will a pool magically appear in our backyard? You know, normal thoughts like that.

About a year ago, I shared our long-term plans for our backyard. As I mentioned in that post, we are going to have to take the backyard project in small bites, not only due to the scope of the project, but for the overall costs as well. This spring or later this fall, I would really like to get some trees going along the perimeters where we know they won’t interfere with a potential pool. With that, I would like to spruce up the rest of our current backyard space that pretty much is only used to store our grill and smoker currently. I’m ready for operation: backyard beautification!

A few weeks back I did a post about where you can find, what I believe to be, identical outdoor striped curtains. I’m at the point I’m ready to pull the trigger. Because of the height of our covered porch, I’m likely going to have to buy them from Pottery Barn because I need the drapes to be the 124″ length. Fortunately, that gives me the opportunity to choose among a wide array of colors. I’ll likely go with the gray and white stripe combo. Here’s a little Photoshop mock-up of how I would forsee our back patio looking with the drapes, a sectional, some more trees, hydrangesa, and roses, as well as with a pool on the back perimeter. Not bad, right?

For reference, here is how the space looked early last spring:

Big difference as far as privacy and aesthetics go, right? As a reminder, our lot is very pie-shaped {we live on a U-shaped street so our lot is similar to being in a cul-de-sac}. The view shown above shows our side lot {where you see the three other homes} as well as a glimpse into our backyard on the left hand side. The sectional I’m showing above is likely much to large for the space in real life, but I would love to add some seating to this back porch. We may just have to figure out a new option for grilling though for that too work. Either way, I know we’ll be moving forward with some landscaping and the curtain in the near future!

Long-term, I would love to do something like this but it would likely require a bigger space that we have:

I’m hoping over the upcoming weeks, I’ll have something more to show you in this space!

Your backyard is going to be gorgeous! I love those PB curtains! Josh and I love apartment living but we’re really missing greenery and outdoor space. I’ll be excited to move into a house someday!

And random but if you ever want to get together for drinks sometime I’d love to meet you!

I loved those curtains too when I was hunting for our patio. I could not pull the trigger since we would have needed 6 of them and the longest would still be short, plus the price is heart stopping. I ended up using canvas painters cloth. They’re still short but at $9 a panel I’m okay with it and it still gives the patio that homey, beachy feel.
