One Room Challenge: Laundry Room Makeover Week 3

Welcome to Week 3 of my One Room Challenge project: making over our laundry room. I’ve teamed up Linda at Calling It Home along with hundreds of other bloggers around the country to share a full room makeover in a short six week window!

Week 1 | Week 2

As many of you may know, I’m in Costa Rica this week through Monday and I was in Salt Lake City for Snap Conference for the better part of last week. So, needless to say, progress hasn’t been great. But, today I want to share my design board for the space. I’m sure that stopped many of you in your tracks. Yes, I am just now sharing a design board and it is already halfway through the challenge. Yikes! 🙂 I did speak generally about my plans in the week 1 post, but honestly, since I had just decided to join a few days prior, I hadn’t had a chance to really work out my thoughts.

So, here is my dream space. Will all of this be able to be accomplished over the remaining three weeks? Likely not, but it gives me a good longer-term vision! I’m going for a beachy industrial vibe.

 

Some notes on the items in the design.

Painted cabinets – The currently aqua cabinets need to be updated and I think I’ll be able to get them fully painted prior to the end of the challenge. By changing them from aqua to a gray tone, I think it will help update the space rather dramatically and make it look a bit more polished and sophisticated. I have several gray-toned cans of chalk paint on hand, so I’ll likely use one of them rather than overthink the color selection. The aqua paint was a chalk-based paint as well and it has adhered to the laminate well, so I think it’s a good option. (Cabinet image in design plan via Home Depot).

New washer and dryer – We finally upgraded to a washer/dryer set where the knobs don’t fall off each time we use it. It’s the Samsung Top Load Washer (with a built-in sink!) and Electric Dryer with Steam. The set has actually been delivered (I’ll be sharing more about it next week with progress photos) and I can’t believe how giddy new appliance can make us. You can see the set below in the ad image. It’s a bit hard to tell, but it is actually a black/stainless combo and I love the look of it! It really is crazy just how far technology has come in the ten+ years since we bought our last set (and just how efficient the new models are)! Ironing Board/Iron Storage – I mentioned this week one, but I’ve devised a solution to finally deal with our iron and ironing board storage once and for all! Rather than throwing it in a random closet, we’ve built out a fairly simple storage method. I’ll be sharing all the plans in two weeks!

Greenery – This is very minor addition, but can make a world of difference. I feel like most room tend to fall flat without a bit of greenery, so I plan to add it in two spaces 🙂 I’ve become a bit obsessed with faux maidenhair ferns lately, so I’m sure you’ll see some in this space.

Lighting – I really like the light we currently have in our laundry room – and LOVE the linear shape – but I may move forward with a darker version. With the black/stainless appliances and a few other black accents, I think a more rustic or industrial style light may look best. This may or may not occur before the end of the challenge. Still in love with this black linear chandelier – but I’m hoping to find a more cost effective version!

Shiplap walls – This is something I would love to incorporate in our laundry room. We DIY’d our own in our mudroom and I think the look would be great here as well. Unfortunately, this likely won’t get done before the end of the challenge (or maybe even until fall) but I wanted to keep the idea as part of the overall plan while working through the current phase. I had also considered adding white subway tiles to the entire room, but think the shiplap will be a much more cost-effective update.

Tile floors – This one falls in the longer-term plans, as well, but we desperately need to replace the existing linoleum. It is very yellowed, and really isn’t the right tone for anything else in our house. I would love to replace it with either patterned concrete tiles (like this gorgeous blue patterned ceramic tile) or the tiles that look like hardwood. It is a very small space, so I feel that it could be updated rather cost effectively.

Artwork – I’m still scheming artwork for the space, but I also think it is a great opportunity to bring in some more blue and green in an otherwise neutral space. Once I make a final decision on a piece, I’ll be sure to let you know!

What do you think of the overall plans?

I’m at the point, where I’m quickly realizing just how dumb it was to take on a project of this scale in a six week window. Especially since I am gone two full weeks of the challenge. However, it’s been good to get me to push forward and make changes I’ve known I needed to make for some time. Now that the design board is finished, I’m even more excited to see the progress. I’m just not going to be too hard on myself when I don’t complete everything I had hoped to do in the six week window. Because let’s face it – there is no way this design board will fully come to fruition in the three weeks we have left. BUT, I’m excited that I’m well on my way to achieving the look I really want!
