It’s one of my favorite times of the year – planting season! Today I’m sharing a few recent planters I’ve purchased, along with some tried and true favorites over the years to give inspiration for the warmer months ahead!

Back when we lived in Omaha, the “safe” planting weekend was always thought to be Mother’s Day. After that point, there was very little chance of getting a hard freeze again. Now that we live in Northwest Florida, that date is closer to St. Patrick’s Day! So, to the surprise of nobody, I dragged Kurtis to a local nursery with me yesterday after a few hours at the beach. I am planter season ready!
When we first moved into our home, I had a little olive tree on the front porch and loved it so much. It died during a really cold streak we had a year ago, so I replaced it with a Royal Cape plumbago topiary that was an annual. That was fun too, but I realized I didn’t love the constant dropping of petals on the front porch. They stuck to everything! So, yesterday I picked up a cute new little olive tree and added it to this chippendale planter I recently ordered from Wayfair.

I can’t get over how much I love the simplicity of this planter and tree combo! Here’s a closer look at the pattern and finish. I have the larger of the two sizes in the white color.

You may recognize the planter, as we had several in Omaha in the smaller size. I had them sprinkled throughout some of our larger tree beds to break up all the brown mulch and shade from the trees! This particular year I had planted them with mandevilla and a hibiscus plant.

I also picked up this self-watering planter for my herbs. These guys love sunshine, but by mid-season or so, I get really tired of the daily watering sessions. If you’ve tried a self-watering planter before, they really do add several days in between when you need to water, which is well worth the expense in many cases!
For my herbs, I don’t want them to get watered with our sprinkler water, so I have to hand water them with a hose with fresh potable water. I’m excited to give this planter a try this year! I’ve had great luck with this brand in the past! Sadly I got home with all my herbs and realized I didn’t have an organic potting mix left like I thought I did, so I’ll be planting these later this week (they won’t be so jammed in tight either, nor will I be keeping the sweet potato vine in there). This year I’m planting basil, parsley and mint, all of which we tend to use on a weekly basis. I’d love to be able to get cilantro to grow, but I typically kill it within a week or two every single time! This self-watering planter comes in four shapes and sizes and two color options!

We used this favorite self-watering planter in several locations in Omaha. I highly recommend going the self-watering route for areas in your yard where you have a planter that isn’t reached by sprinklers (or you intentionally don’t want reached, like my little herb garden). In these planters I have oleander topiaries (toxic if ingested so be aware if you have curious pets or little kids), sweet potato vines and wave petunias. I’ve found that these plants do just as well in our area of Florida as they did in Omaha!

I actually used this exact combo in our Florida backyard two years ago! In this one I also added some asparagus grass which is a nice filler that tends to do well in both climates! You can find a similar planter here.

I used the same planters along the pool house once that project was complete. In this particular planter I used mandevilla (I had to keep adding a taller trellis!), lobelia, and wave petunias.

Another favorite were these tall planters. I believe I had collected six or so of them during our 10+ years we lived in our last Omaha home and they always held up so well. I love the shape and they also come with an insert if you choose to use it, which helps lessen the amount of dirt needed to fill it (and also makes it much less heavy). I’m considering getting some of these in the light gray option for our new house! I loved to fill them with a yucca cane plant and then typically sweet potato vines (green or purple) and some wave petunias.

Here are even more planter finds! A few are better suited for a covered outdoor situation (and dry air). Please also note that they are not to scale in the graphic below, so be sure to check measurements! But most come in a variety of sizes and colors! All sources are listed below the graphic.

While Wayfair is typically known for the furniture and decor, they also have a great selection of gardening essentials, and even some live plant offerings!
