Mudroom Renovation

Room Makeovers + Design Plans

Here is the start of my mudroom renovation!   I will show you what we have completed so far and a list of what we still need to do.

Out of the semi-blue, my husband and I decided to demo the mudroom over the weekend. And it was mostly me highly suggesting the event occur and bribing him with some refreshing craft beer, but whatever works. I can’t believe the progress we have made so far! It isn’t even close to being done, but already I find it to be a billion percent better than where we started. Which was here.

The mudroom before the renovation with a small bench and hooks on a wall.

It’s borderline depressingly bland, right? Bottom line is we love having the space but it was definitely lacking any character.  This is the first room in the house my husband and I walk into from the garage when we come home at night. We wanted a lighter, brighter and happier, more welcoming place to come home to every day!

Saturday I got to work with the demo. I felt like the current coat rack was hung a little too low and the proportions looked off on the wall. The lone cabinet in the room also feel to short and squatty and didn’t take advantage of the room’s tall ceilings.

You may remember a bit back I hung a darling chandelier in the space. It may just be one of my favorite light fixtures ever. However, it only takes two 40 watt bulbs. Which, even for a small room like this, is definitely not enough. You’ll really be able to see that in my progress shots below. It is truly beautiful but really can only be a secondary light in a space. I ordered this one {which I talked about in a previous Wednesday Watch List} on Sunday night, when I knew the beaded one just wasn’t going to cut it. You may also remember, I tested some Behr Dolphin Fin paint {at 50% intensity} on the wall above the coat rack so you’ll notice that area has been painted. Still not 100% sure if the paint color is a keeper in here or not.

Here’s the renovation progress as it stands. You’ll have to use your imagination a little given that the lighting is so terrible now with only 80 watts, but still a huge improvement!

A small bench with storage underneath in the mudroom.

Shoes in the cubby holes of the storage bench.

White cabinets in the mudroom with drawers.

And here’s the space with the light off {it’s dark!} but then you don’t have the ridiculous low-light bead shadows everywhere {you can also see the contrast in paint colors a little better and just how cute that chandelier really is}:

A wooden beaded chandelier in the mudroom.

Like I said – we still have a ton of work to do. But here’s what we’ve done so far:

  • Prior hook rack/trim removed
  • 5″ wood planks added {full tutorial coming soon!}
  • New, wider, hook rack./trim added – and raised 6″
  • 5.5″ wood added to extend cabinet height
  • Wood planks primed
  • Changed outlet from cream to white

Need to do:

  • Add crown to top of cabinets
  • Add shelf on top of hook trim piece
  • Find new hooks
  • Sand and paint all cabinets, bench, wood slats, etc.
  • Cover countertop with this
  • Paint walls
  • Paint doors and trim
  • Change light switch from cream to white
  • Find rug that fits floor space but doesn’t cover the floor vent
  • Hang new light
  • Bench cushion and throw pillows?

I’m seriously already grinning ear to ear every time I walk in or by the mudroom. It’s kinda ridiculous. It’s been awhile since we’ve done some basic construction but these are the projects that I ultimately love the most. What do you think of the changes so far? I’ll keep you posted on the progress!

Also, be sure to check out my designer fabric sale – it ends Wednesday night! If you would like to follow along on more of my home decor, DIY, lifestyle and other posts, I’d love to have you follow me on any of the following:

I love your shiplap wall with picture ledge! I’m wondering what height your picture ledge is? I know you have 9 ft ceilings, but I’m curious if the same height would work for 8 ft ceilings? Thanks!
