I mentioned here some of my goals for the new year as it relates to our home. After reading through the list, my husband and I decided the most practical place to start would be the master bath since it is used on a daily basis. Rather than doing a complete overhaul, we thought we could drastically improve the space with some fresh paint, lighting and new mirrors. Then, several years down the road, if we still feel inclined, we can do a major overhaul.
Since I have only showed the master bathroom in the one photo linked above, I thought I would share a little more about the space before looking at our ideas. The number one biggest concern – squeaky wheel again – is the flat, flesh-toned paint. I would say the paint in this bathroom is in the worst shape of any room in our house. Flat paint mixed with water, hairspray, etc. = no bueno.
Vanity area – biggest gripe here is the mirrors {they are not wood – more of a resin material with bad seams and a printed floral pattern around the entire shape – you can slightly make it out in the second photo}. We also are not a big fan of the lights – especially since we can see a ring around each of them where the paint didn’t reach. Apparently the walls were painted after lights were installed but fixtures weren’t removed?
In this space, the curtain will come down, paint will go up, and I would love to find a cool pendant {that works in a canned light box} for over the tub. I will likely also hang art on the wall to the left of the curtain {basically over the foot of the tub}.
Here’s the problem with the current towel bars. It is very apparent that the original was installed centered under the two square windows. The prior home owners must have realized they needed a second but couldn’t find a matching. The one they bought was then installed next to the existing – not re-centered. Not a big deal since I actually prefer hooks. So, bottom-line is they both need to go, the wall needs to be repaired, and then I want to add towel hooks to the area behind the door to the toilet {this area faces you when you step out of the shower}. We loved the hooks vs. towel bars in our last bathroom from a functional perspective, and think it will work well here. Another bonus: when you are in the bedroom, you don’t see our towels haphazardly hung on the wall.
And now for the fun part. I think we can change this room pretty dramatically with paint, lights and mirrors – which should all be relatively inexpensive changes to the room. With the dark, masculine feeling tile, I want everything else to be shiny and chrome to add that clean, glamorous feel to an otherwise blah bathroom.
Sources:
Frameless Mirrors via Home Depot Canada – we need these in the U.S. – so stylish and a killer deal! This pin shows just how beautiful they are in a real space – the factory photo I used above just doesn’t do them justice.
Lights via Lowe’s – these are necessarily the lights but I know I want chrome with white shades
Towel Rings via Overstock – again chrome with a square base. The faucets will eventually go chrome with countertops/sinks down the road.
Paint – wall color image via The Lettered Cottage – Benjamin Owl Gray ligtened 50% – the link also contains details as to why you don’t just select the next lighter color on the paint chip. Interesting read!
Hardware – I would love to change the drawers pulls to some chrome and glass, much like these from Restoration Hardware, at some point in the future.
Faucets – We aren’t ready to replace faucets until we do the countertops down the road, but I think these from Restoration Hardware would be the design we would look for at that time.
Granted, I have some other projects to wrap up {per my resolution} and quite a bit of travel on the horizon, but I’d like to start painting in the next few weeks. Baby steps!
And don’t forget, there’s still time to enter my giveaway for a $325 HomeGoods giftcard along with a Lallitara tote!
Looks like a fabulous plan. Can’t wait to see it. I have one of the Home Depot mirrors (i live in Canada) and I love it. One word of caution, though, make sure you seal the bottom edges of the mirror with clear silicone caulking because splashing water can seep in between the mirror and backing and make a big stained mess! ….and I have the big stained mess to prove it 🙂 Good luck with your plans.
I searched and searched for this mirror in the US with no luck. Home Depot wasn’t able to help either. I did find a similar one at Hobby Lobby but it was not a vanity size. Perhaps that would work if you want just one mirror.
We have those mirrors as well as the same one in a tall leaning size……lovely! And so much more economical than comparable ones I have seen.
Love the Grey Owl / 50% Grey Owl.
I bet it will look gorgeous with all those freshen-ups Sarah! Can’t wait to see it!!
Stopping by from Thrifty Decor Chick. I love the plans for your bathroom, although it looks pretty dang good like it is! 😉 I’m your newest follower via GFC, bloglovin’ and Hometalk.
Have a great weekend,
Audrey
It is amazing what some paint can do to freshen up the space, and moving the towel bars (I prefer hooks as well) will make a big difference if they are annoying you now. Cant wait to see the new space!
Hopped over from Sarah’s, love the ideas for the bathroom redo. I am also your newest follower and I would love to invite you to link up your projects to my Inspire Me Tuesday party every week. http://www.astrollthrulife.net.
