I have a lot of lights that I need to change out, I need some lighting help!
I’ve previously mentioned the need to change the lights over our kitchen island {which hopefully will go up this weekend} but there are a few other areas that will need some lighting help. All the lights in the hallways/open areas are dark and mission style which doesn’t mesh well with our style or decorations – or the rest of the house for that matter. Interestingly, there are can lights in all of these areas as well, so I feel these were added for decorative purposes only {although they obviously function as well}.
Lighting In My House
Here are some shots of the lights both at night and in the daytime. You can see everything casts a very orange/yellow/warm glow rather than bright and light and I don’t think the scale is right on any of them. The good news is I think I can sell them all on Craig’s List {assuming I can find a ladder tall enough to take them all down}.
Unfortunately, lights are expensive and I need a lot of them. Four sconces, a semi-flush mount for the entryway and three large chandelier types for the two floor ceiling spaces. $$$$$.
Picking The Right Lighting
Another issue I struggle with – I want to ensure the lights all work well together. If I get brushed nickel chandeliers, I want to ensure the wall sconces are the same finish. Not matchy-matchy, just coordinating. Cohesive. I have never shopped for sconces either, so it has been a battle to find something I like that doesn’t look bathroomy.
My top pick for the chandeliers is this sexy guy {but with regular bulbs} – the Crystorama Orb Chandelier from Ballard Design (also available at tons of other stores):
I still love it in this room from the Street of Dreams this summer:
Now I just need a second job. Has any one found any good knock-offs of this guy? I have only found one or two but the price-point still isn’t quite right to buy three of them.
I have mixed feelings on this Restoration Hardware knock-off of the Foucault Orb Crystal Chandelier that has a fairly similar look. It’s finally back in stock and is a steal compared to the RH version {theirs sells for $2195 – I wish I were kidding}. Is it a bit too much with the orb and all the crystals? This photo is the Overstock version.
Has anyone found any great sconces lately? Overstock is pretty much my go-to for lighting so I haven’t explored much outside of their website.

Hi Sarah-
Did you see YHL’s post today on their new light collection at Shades of light. There is one similar to the Orb Chandelier you like. Check it out here: http://www.shadesoflight.com/product.php?productid=426553&cat=581&page=1 Plus, there are a bunch of other amazing options too. Let me know what you think? I am ordering a couple asap!

Thanks for sharing! I had not even heard of those before! They are all super-cute. Unfortunately I need ones that have more than one bulb due to the size of the areas I need them for. However, I am already scheming where in the house I can use a one-bulb light 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

I just ran across your blog via design*dump and absolutely love the style you’ve brought to your home! Thank you for sharing such inspirational photos! Pottery Barn is one of my favorite “go to” places for lighting – check out the Harlowe Wire & Glass Pendant on the PB site. I recently used them over a client’s kitchen island – they are gorgeous (especially in person) and so unique!

Just to clarify… Restoration Hardware’s IS the Foucault chandelier, not a knock-off of the Foucault.

Yes – you are correct. My wording above is unclear so thanks for the clarification! The knock-off is the version I link to above from Overstock.
