Today I decided to start priming our island cabinets so that the entire island is white.  Something was just off when we left the front of the cabinets their natural color and the sides and back were the white beadboard.  I figured it must be really bad if the husband actually agreed to let me paint the cabinets.  Here is an old shot of the before {when the countertops were actually clean}:

Today I started by removing all of the doors and hardware {being sure to label the doors along with their hardware so that everything would fit back together seamlessly} and then washed everything down really well.  I then applied two coats of Zinsser 123 primer to everything {I have read this is the best for kitchen cabinets and adheres really well so that you don’t have to sand the facing, which can actually damage this type of cabinetry}.  Loving the cohesive look of all white so far!

I have to say, I am a little nervous about this whole project.  Thankfully it is just a small area so that if I do mess it up beyond repair there is much less that will need to be redone.  I also have to keep reminding the husband that this is paint and not stain, so there is going to be some texture to it.  I also try to tell him that this is supposed to look like a piece of furniture moved in, not kitchen cabinets.  We’ll see how convincing I was when this is all done.  I would really like to paint the bathroom cabinets if this all turns out.
I am really excited with the possibility that it just may turn out and we have an amazing new island!  Stay tuned for the results.  I won’t be able to paint until next weekend and then it will have to dry several days before I will be able to rehang the doors.  Here are the back sides of the doors with just one coat of primer.  I am loving it so far!
I am also contemplating switching the handles on the four drawers to something like these {where the original pulls would stay on the cabinet doors}.  The husband isn’t entirely convinced yet but I think he would like it if he saw the finished product:
