black front door

I love my black front door that I freshly painted!

Black front door interior with white board and batten walls

I had the day off today and knew the items I could work on for the cabinets would not take all day {given the required drying times}.  So, I decided to take the plunge and paint the inside of our front door black as blogged about here.  I love it.  It definitely gives a totally different vibe to the entryway.  Not to mention the flat paint that was there really needed a fresh coat.

Long hallway painted off white with a white door at the end.

I went with a satin exterior Valspar paint in Dark Kettle Black {since I plan to paint the exterior of the door too}.  The husband doesn’t know what my plans were {when I told him I was working on a surprise project he thought for sure I was painting the bonus room for the fourth time}.  We’ll see how long until he notices.  My guess is pretty quickly because it is such a huge dramatic change.  It takes away the blah-ness of our entry way and the slight gloss to the door makes it look much more formal and a lot less like a cheap white metal door.

Painting Tutorial

Since I only painted the interior today, I left it hung since none of the surface I was painting touched anything.  I did two coats and the coverage is great.  However, I plan to do a third coat after I remove the door, paint the front and then re-hang it, as it will likely get a ding or two when I paint the front.  It is a MUCH better black than the current paint and is much richer {and I love the slight gloss I mentioned earlier}.

This was a super quick project.  Each coat took less than 30 minutes and then I allowed about six hours between coats.

Before {the many stages}:

A white door with a light in front of the door.
A hallway table in front of the door.
Three cats by the front door.

After the first coat {pretty streaky at this point}:

Painting the front door black.

Finished {the paint was still a little wet in some areas but I couldn’t wait to take pictures}:

Black interior front door with white board and batten walls.
The door painted black with the light on in front of it.
Clearly: a) the door hardware blends in now – not sure about my thoughts on that and b) I need to get a cute rug for the entry.  Who knew my cheapy $3 mat from Target would still be there two years later.  I’ll post in a few weeks once I get a chance to update the exterior.
