The Blues

Room Makeovers + Design Plans

You can help me decide whether the blues is an accurate paint color or whether the paint was not properly mixed?

So, remember my amazing PhotoShop mock-up of our entry hallway where I swapped out the lighting and painted the walls Restoration Hardware’s Pale Silver? Well, a few days later, it was fate and RH offered a 20% discount on your entire purchase. They must read my blog.  So, I loaded up and bought two gallons of the Pale Silver, only having seen the paint swatch online {and very few photos of rooms that used the same color}.

While I was painting the living room and kitchen last weekend, I decided to paint a few coats of the pale silver on a sample wall to ensure I liked it. I swear it looks like neon baby blue.  Now, I should back up a few steps.  The paint arrived while we were at work, so it sat in the freezing cold for several hours.  When I opened the gallon, something seemed off – the paint was lumpy at the bottom and runny at the top.  I did my best to mix it but you know how hard that can be with a full gallon of paint.

Bottom line, I’m worried I got more pigment than paint, hence the bright blue. Keep in mind this is in the Silver Sage family line {the color I painted in our main bathroom in our last house}.

My inspiration room photos – all from Tiek Built Homes:

Now that your mind is saturated with photos of how the hue should look, here’s the best representation of how the color looks on my wall.

A light blue wall in the hallway.
A bathroom with the door opened and the light blue painted wall.
The dark wood floor, white baseboards and a light blue wall.

Does it look off to you? I feel like it is missing the grayish/greenish tone to subdue it a little. My husband immediately walked in the house the day I painted it and he asked ‘Why is that wall blue?’ I don’t want it to immediately read blue.

Is it because it’s next to the fleshy original paint color and/or our off-white trim? Should I still give it a shot and just keep trying to mix it better? Or paint a bigger sample area to have a better overall feel? Have you had experience with this color before? Am I crazy and it actually looks like the sample? I’ll stop asking questions now. But opinions are appreciated!

It looks absolutely blue to me. You should contact RH with your concerns- if they are any kind of honest, they will send you new paint for free…the customer is always right!
