Coastal Den Reveal

Decorating Ideas, Tips and Trends, Room Makeovers + Design Plans

Sharing our coastal den reveal! See how we transformed this little-used bedroom into a cozy sanctuary for relaxing and watching movies.

IT’S DEN REVEAL DAY! I’m so excited to share our coastal den reveal with you today, so I’m just going to get right to it! You can read more about our original den ideas & design plans plus our updated design plans and progress for a little background on this project. Today we’ll just get right to the pretty pictures and details!

A huge thank you to my friends at Serena & Lily for providing me with several of the products I chose for this reveal. As always, all thoughts and opinions of products are my own. This post also contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

We moved into our home in December of 2014, and by April, this is essentially how the den room looked. It was a collection zone for fabric, pillows, and random cast-offs that weren’t being used elsewhere in the house.

The den before the renovation with dark walls and a desk.

The space has undergone a number of makeovers as my craft room (the two most notable ones here and here). But as time evolved, it was apparent that I was no longer doing crafts. The room was becoming the dumping ground for all my home decor stuff. We also quickly realized that being a one-TV home wasn’t going to cut it after we moved the craft room TV to the living room.

So, we talked it over quite a bit for the last year, and ultimately decided the room would be best served as a den. Since it’s actually a bedroom, it felt weird calling it a family room so the “den” term stuck. We took our time to think through the room possibilities and what we needed in the space, and in January I ordered the sectional to get the ball rolling on our den makeover.

And here’s how that same view looks now! A gorgeous light and bright den!  We chose items that are beautiful but also very durable and comfortable so they can stand the test of time. Let’s dig into the dramatic details!

A beautiful coastal inspired den with a linen sectional, bamboo and enamel coffee table, palm tree art, and blue and white striped pillows.

One of my favorite decor details in the new space is the board and batten grid wall that Kurtis and I added. It gives this relatively neutral room some major visual impact! I went with four rows of squares (which is one more row than we used in our guest bedroom and office). Since it’s the same color as the other walls in the room (Benjamin Moore Simply White), I wanted the graphic detail to stand out a bit more. I love how it turned out! We have a board and batten grid tutorial if you’re interested in how we install these types of walls. Getting the boards up typically only takes half a day. It’s the caulking and sanding and painting that ends up being much more involved. But to me, it’s totally worth all the work!

The sectional is still too short in the middle section (new legs arrived yesterday and haven’t been attached yet) but we’re really happy with it so far! I’ll plan to do a more thorough sofa review once we’ve had it several months. You can see the exact specifics on what we ordered here.

A white sectional sofa with blue and white pillows and a small coffee table.

And here’s a quick look from another angle. Initially, I hadn’t even considered leaving the hats on the wall. But when I saw how eye-catching they looked above the TV, I actually loved it! I had to do a little rearranging (and leave some space for more) but the hats are perfect yet again in this airy space! Especially since each one was purchased on or for a specific vacation we took! I can’t wait to see the collection grows over the years.

The TV stand is a budget buy but I actually adore how it looks in the space! It’s just the right size and stores everything we need in the den. I do still need to find a way to hide our cords and power strip, but I think a piece of white cardboard behind the DVD player cut to size will do the trick!

Beachy hats in various neutral shades above the tv in the den.

The Market Coffee Table is so chic yet durable enough for our remodeled den! I love the removable white enamel tray and all the interior storage available. It may or may not be perfect for hiding more throw pillows 😉 The warm welcoming wood tones also add some much needed warmth to the space!

A coastal bamboo coffee table with white enamel tray top that is durable and great for indoor or outdoor use! Decorated with a vase of greenery, a blue and white linen tray for TV remotes, and various beach inspired books and glass beads.

I’m obsessing over this pillow pattern combo. The wide stripe pillow, tassel stripe pillow and palm print pillow are now three of my favorites ever! Two of the three are actually indoor/outdoor pillows so I know they’ll be durable while also looking super cute!

Beautiful Serena & Lily pillows in a blue and white stripe, stripe with tassels, and navy blue and white palm leaf print.

I found this cute little side table for the lamp, and I love that it coordinates so well with the coffee table. I wasn’t actually planning on adding a lamp in the room, until I realized how much better the space functions with one. We’ve gotten so used to our Lutron outlets in our living room and other areas in our home, that I plan to add one to the lamp so we can turn it on and off with our phones! It will be perfect when I use the space for reading, as well.

A white board and batten grid wall with a linen sectional, blue gray lamp, bamboo and white resin side table, and blue and white striped pillows.

The beach artwork is a piece I’ve had for years and used to be in our living room. I think it looks perfect in the den now! I was originally going to hang it above the sectional, but ultimately decided I didn’t want to cover all of our hard work and the cool board and batten pattern! The ribbon-trimmed roman shades have also hung in the space for as long as I can remember, and I think they still look great with the new room design! Plus, they’re black-out lined making them perfect for watching movies! They no longer come in this light blue trim version, but they do still carry gray and navy blue – both of which I also love!

Palm tree art in a coastal den design. I love all of the blue, white and neutral accents in this TV room!

You’ll notice we didn’t change the overhead light. I actually still really like this one, so it hasn’t been a priority to swap it out. The rug completely changes the vibe in the room. As you know, I hate our carpet in our upstairs. It’s all buckling and the color is just off. So this diamond jute rug with loads of texture hides the carpet, but is also durable and adds to the beachy vibe in the space! I’ve had the little jute poufs for years and they’re mostly here for the cats. If you think there’s no way they’ll get used, Henley very intently watched Win A Date With Tad Hamilton on one earlier this week. I think she really wanted to find out how she could win that date 😉

A light and bright den with jute rug, linen sectional, board and batten walls, a bamboo and enamel coffee table, palm tree art, ribbon trimmed roman shades and blue and white striped pillows.

I actually bought this striped gauze blanket for our guest bedroom but then decided to steal it for the den. It’s actually a king size bed blanket, but I love how thin the gauze is so I can fold it to make it heavier as needed. It’s been perfect for quiet movie nights, especially on warmer days!

A blue and white striped gauze blanket draped over the arm of the sectional couch.

I still need to have the window trim and interior doors painted white, but that’s a project for another day (or year)! It’s also the reason you’re not seeing other angles of the room. The makeover doesn’t have quite the same impact with two almond colored doors 😉

I hope you enjoyed this den makeover! We’ve certainly enjoyed having this extra space in our home! And another huge thank you to Serena & Lily for providing me with some of the beautiful products in this room makeover!

Love! Awesome transformation. Movie night! My husband thinks once a room is decorated that is it should stay the same forever! No need to change. Then once it’s updated, he says I like it. 🙂

Thank you!! And I totally get it. Kurtis is usually the same way. Thankfully this was one makeover he was fully supporting but likely because it involved a new TV so he didn’t have to give up watching football 😉

Very comfy room to relax, curl up with a book or watch a movie with the kids. Just enough to be interesting while still keeping calm. Great style as usual.

Thank you so much Susan! That’s exactly what we were going for. A beautiful space that was also comfy and we didn’t have to worry about everything feeling too “precious”. 🙂

Looks so good! Our sofa just arrived this morning. I got the same fabric after your recommendation because I thought hey if cat vomit cleans up nicely surely whatever my kids throw at it will too 😉

Sarah – what a GREAT idea! Room looks great! Was just wondering what you did with all of your décor and how/where did you organize it? If you have a post on that, I would love a reprint. Trying to get ideas on that myself. Anyhow, room is great!

I actually sold it to a local reader who was looking for a bed for her daughter’s new big-girl room 🙂
