Chalk Painted Buffet Table

DIY Projects, Paint Projects

Today I’m sharing the before and after of our chalk painted buffet table. Consider this the prequel to the desk reveal. In addition to getting the office desk completed, I also finished the table in our upstairs hallway that I talked about here. This chalk paint DIY buffet was the first piece in our house to get a coat of the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in French Linen. This piece of furniture has had a good amount of use, particularly in our living room in our last house {we have two matching versions of this – I only painted one}.

I had moved it to the hallway upstairs a few months back to help fill the un-decorated void. It is also a rather functional piece, as my husband moved all of our Wi-Fi and internet components inside the unit {it gives us the strongest Wi-Fi signal throughout our home in this location}. The black paint just felt really heavy and I wanted to freshen it up a bit.

The buffet table sits at the end of our upstairs hallway. The lighter chalk paint color makes such a difference!

Chalk Painted Buffet Table – Supplies For Project

  • 1 pint Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in French Linen – (this one is very similar)
  • Chip Brushes
  • Annie Sloan Soft Wax (clear) – (this one is similar)
  • Old White Cotton T-Shirt
  • 400 grit sand paper
  • You can find an almost identical buffet table/console table here.

I left the top with the wood stain and painted the remaining black areas with the French Linen paint. I did two coats and then lightly sanded the whole thing with 400 grit sandpaper. I then wiped it down really well and applied one coat of Annie Sloan’s Soft Wax {using an old, white cotton t-shirt}.

I watched a few YouTube tutorials about the process and then went to town. Originally, I was going to apply two coats of wax, but this piece is in such a low traffic area, it really didn’t seem necessary. I applied both the chalk paint and the wax with cheap chip brushes they offered at the store that sold the paint and wax, as they are what is recommended.

But – one word of caution is watch for the falling bristles! The great thing about the chalk paint is that if you miss any, you can easily pull them up once the paint is dry and then just touch up the area affected. Without the wax, the paint is a super-flat finish – much like an actual chalkboard but the paint isn’t as durable in that state. The wax adds a slight sheen, smooths out the surface and saturates the color.

Here, with only one coat, you can see how streaky and light the paint looks. The second coat really changed that and the wax helped to fully saturate the color.

Now, with the Castle Path paint flanking the piece on both sides in the guest bedroom and stairwell {with the original wall paint in the middle} I am much more motivated to get the upstairs hallway painted. And get new lights! Same story new day 😉

Bottom line – I am a new fan of chalk paint. Be sure to check out our desk makeover as well if you haven’t already!

I got it at Nebraska Furniture Mart a few years back. I actually found it in the dining room table section (it was a buffet table).

Love it – looks SO great! Where did you get your lamp and the boxwoods? That’s EXACTLY what I want a table in my house to look like 🙂 Would love any tips/suggestions. Thanks!

Thank you! The lamp and boxwoods are from either TJ Maxx or HomeGoods. They were acquired over time. Any time I see boxwoods at one of those stores I snag them because they are so hard to come by at an affordable price!
