Dining Room Light Alternatives

Decorating Ideas, Tips and Trends, Room Makeovers + Design Plans

Since designing my initial plans for our dining room makeover, I have been relentless in my search to find the chandelier I wanted on sale. After a few months, I’ve ultimately decided that it doesn’t seem to ever go on sale {or if it does it’s only 10% off} – and I refuse to pay $1,200 for a light. With that being said, I’ve rounded up a few more lights to review as alternatives.

Following are some options I’m considering – and with my amazing Photoshop skills you can see just how they’ll look in the space. Several are still far more than I’ve ever spent on a light, but this is my one location left in our home where I can hang a chandelier without fear of heads bumping it. So I want something good! If you’re interested in more info on any of the lights, click the link attached to the bottom of each photo. Which look is your favorite?

So, if you were me, which one would you go with? The original? One of the options here? Start my search over? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Have a great Easter weekend!

Oh man, that wood bead one has had my heart since it first came out! Out of these it’s got my vote for sure, I think it would be perfect for your style and space. That being said, I do agree with you that your dream light is uber perfect, so I’d actually love to see some similar rectangular options too. I like that at rectangular light would have a contrasting shape to the circular tray and large mirror (which is swoonworthy too!). Can’t wait to see it all!

I think the Quatrefoil one fits the mood and style of your space the best. Good luck with whatever you choose and hope you get it at a great price!

Love the options. I think the one in the first picture is really cute. it ties in with the other wood tones in the room. and then the 6th picture one is really great, its simple and pretty, it has a great shape.

Where did you get those table lamps on the wine rack/cabinet? Love them!!!

FUN little survey to play!! I like the quatrefoil chandelier, because it is visually light, not heavy, in the space. That said, I like the original $$$$ one best. I think it’s size fits the room better than the quatrefoil. Have you had any luck finding similar ones but at a lower price point? Can we see those options???

I completely agree with everything Emily said. Let’s see some rectangular options. But the wood bead one wins hands down from those that you’ve initially selected. Can’t wait to see more!

I like the capiz & gold chandelier or the quatrefoil chandelier. I think they tie in together well with the mirror. The others seem to woodsy and I think there’s enough of that in the dining table, chairs, and buffet table.

I agree regarding the capiz and quatrefoil are my favorites. Between those, I’d go with the capiz because it appears more timeless and I love how the capiz brings in some nature and texture to the room. Can’t wait to see what you pick!

The capiz shell one! Your house has an understated coastal vibe, I think this fits well! I would avoid the dark wood ones, I think they feel heavy. Second choice is the quatrefoil or white carved wood. Did you check Overstock for some more like your origial one? I feel live I have seen those styles there.

I live the capiz and gold. The photo does not do it justice. I’ve seen in the dining room in real life and it is stunning. The beaded anf quatrefoil lights are also nice but I think they are not classic enough and may look dated earlier than anything else.

I should say quatrefoil seems like a fad that got huge, and will pass so I’m reluctant to use it in something pricey like a chandelier. Don’t shoot me! I have quatrefoil motifs on rugs and curtains all over my house but the thought did occur to me.

I vote for the Capiz (I have one in my home that I love!) and the quatrefoil since they both keep the space light and I feel like they coincide more with your style. I do have a fear that all things quatrefoil will soon seem dated since we have all played up that shape so much. It’s a gorgeous light though. Robin @ http://www.designbyrobinsnest.blogspot.com

I like the wood and chrome (1st pic) but if you repaint your dining buffet or table lighter it wouldn’t go as well. I also like the bead chandelier but it’s similar to the one in your home office. So my vote is for the quatrefoil chandelier. The capiz is pretty but I see it a lot.

In a lighting store, I would never have picked the first chandelier (wood and metal). But in your setting, it looks custom made for that exact spot! It matches your furniture perfectly.

The beaded and the “candle-like” chandeliers are too busy and their scale is off. I think you’ll tire of them quickly; they’ll date quickly; they’re not classical enough.

The two white chandeliers blend into your white walls and don’t provide the focal point that the perfect chandelier should provide.

The Quatrefoil Brass Chandelier is ok but it introduces another shape into the space which already has the lines of a wall painting, round mirror, rectangular table and bold X lamps. In other words, it doesn’t really relate to anything else in the room. The Wood and Iron Orb repeats the round mirror but I wish it were a darker wood tone.

The Capiz and Gold Chandelier would be my 2nd choice. It looks more like sparkling jewelry for the room and becomes a focal point. The round Capiz repeat the round shape of the mirror too.

    Just my opinion!

I absolutely love the brass quatrefoil chandelier! The brass compliments the framed mirror, and it adds a touch of warmth. I love the first one, but honestly I feel like it’s really dark and heavy for the space. Where your table is dark, I just love the brass color. It’s so light and airy, elegant and warm! Hope this helps.

I like the one with the scalloped shade. I like the way the white shade is banded in a dark color to give definition to the space. I like the capiz one, too, but I don’t think it provides enough contrast near the ceiling. My third choice would be the first one. You probably could make something similar to the beaded one yourself for much less money. As I’ve gotten older, my tastes of been moderated to be more on the practical side by learning that I have to clean and sometimes repair whatever I have in my home! More simplicity means less dusting and easier and less costly repairs.

Would be helpful to see each one when its lit. Would also want to know what type of bulbs each uses, just to see what color light -is it a yellow like incandescent or daylight, stark, etc. Also since LED bulbs use so much less energy, would want to make sure that the fixture was compatible with LED bulbs and also with a dimmer, if you think you might like that option.

I would think that the wood beads would block a lot of the light. Just curious, with the one that’s made from all the wood beads, what are the lighting components inside. Is it one bulb in the middle or several? When I was recently shopping for a ceiling fan with a light, found that if the lamp used only a single bulb, many times the max wattage that could be used was only 60-100 watts. If I went with a design that had separate lights, there was actually a max wattage of 180 watts.

Although the wood beaded one is really cool, if there are children or cats in your future, I could see them wanting to grab those beads, pull and possibly break the strand of beads. If you go with that one, I would check what material is used to string the beads and how sturdy it is. Would not want to have to dust those beads all the time.

I’m sure whatever you decide, the room will be beautiful. Have fun shopping for just the right one!

My vote is for the 1st one. But they all are great choices! And I know the feeling about paying that much for a light. It took me a full year to pull the trigger on ordering the FIlament Chandelier from Restoration Hardware because it was so much. But time and time again that is the light that gets the most attention in my house so I guess the money was worth it. You might be able to save money in other places if you spend more on the lights. Like think of all the money you are saving by making your own window treatments 🙂
