The last update I gave in our dining room was the simultaneous arrival of our hutch and the arrival of my Christmas decor. So, today is the first update with all new furniture in place, neutral decor, and my new never-before-seen Roman shades!
Around the One Room Challenge time, Barn & Willow contacted me to see if I’d be interested in trying some of their Roman shades. Of course I jumped at the opportunity. All of their window coverings are made to order, so they are a perfect fit for your exact windows.
Previously, the room was still feeling really cold to me (see all of our other recent changes here). The addition of the hutch helped, but the room still lacked the softness it needed. Enter, my new Roman shades. Kurtis and I installed all of them over the weekend and it took us about 30 minutes total. For all the windows! Kurtis was even pretty impressed with the clip system used to install the shades.
The decor is super stripped down in the room at this point, but it feels so fresh for the fresh new year! I am loving the new shades more than I thought would be possible.
I started the process by emailing with Barn & Willow and they shipped me some of their free fabric swatches. Guys, it was so hard to pick the fabric I wanted because there’s are all so beautiful! I ultimately went with the off-white flax linen with the flat style shade.
Out of the box, the color looks pretty creamy but since I got the privacy lining (not a blackout lining) I knew the light would filter through and make it the exact color I needed. And it didn’t disappoint! It looks so perfect with our trim (Behr Swiss Coffee).
The additional dimension and layering they add to the room is just so beautiful! They look even better in person because the outside is filtered where the shades are.
They drape so beautifully and I can’t stop looking at them!
I prefer ours to be pulled fairly high (still with a pretty drape) but I made this image below to show you the shade at various levels. It always looks good! It’s on a pulley system, so theoretically, you can have it at any length you want.
Sadly, I now realize how bad the Roman shades are in our living room. I definitely need to explore some new options there!
Now – the good news for you! You can get 10% off any window treatment order with the promo code: BW&VIRGINIASTREET. They have a comprehensive selection of Roman shade styles (not just the flat version I chose) and drapes. Barn & Willow is also happy to send out free fabric swatches for you to review so you can create the design that’s perfect for your home!
I also ordered this rug for the room over the weekend and I can’t wait until it arrives. I think it will help the room feel a bit beachier and less modern or farmhouse-y. I’m excited to add some additional decor to the space over the coming months, but I love the fresh look now!
I feel like our dining room is so close to completion and I’m so excited with just how much more finished it looks with proper window coverings!

Love the new rug and can’t wait to see in the space! Also love the old one with the chevron type pattern. Could you source that for me? I’m needing a neutral rug with some interest, and this one just might work. thanks!

Thank you! Here’s my affiliate link for the old one: http://rstyle.me/n/bd7ruz75re. I really love the look of it, but our cats think it’s their enemy and bite and chew the jute out of the chenille so it is in rough shape!

The room is looking so bright and fresh! I love the soft colors. You mentioned it lacking some warmth. Looking at it from an objective stance, everything in the room is very angular , from the table to the light fixture to the chevron on the rug and the geometry of the hutch, even the geometric pattern of the pillows. The fiddle-leaf fig helps the most with softening the angles but I think you could definitely use some softer lines to get the feel you’re looking for.

What color are you using for the walls? You mention that you used Behr Swiss Coffee for the trim, but I didn’t see the color of the walls. Thanks!
Sarah says
The walls are Behr Silver Drop!

I wanted to order those dining room chairs and I see they are out of stock. They aren’t going to be in until May. Did you find anything similar to them anywhere?
Sarah says
It looks like Wayfair carries them here: http://rstyle.me/n/cjmy2w75re. But, they’re also out of stock. Sorry!

Which Behr paint and sheen did you choose? Eggshell or matte?
Sarah says
Ours is eggshell. I always buy their paint and primer in one 🙂

Thanks for all your posts and beautiful ideas! Did I miss a link to the same Roman shades in the dining room? Could you provide that please! Thanks

They’re from Barn & Willow. They are linked in the post a few places. I hope that helps! 🙂
