Guest Bathroom Makeover: Before and After

DIY Projects, Room Makeovers + Design Plans

This is somewhat of a surprise project {although it was on my list of 2014 home goals}. Over the past few weekends I have been making small but impactful changes to our guest bathroom that is connected to the queen guest bedroom. Other than in my home goals list, the last time I talked about our guest bathroom that is hooked onto our “queen” guest bedroom, was when I shared the befores of both spaces in this post. Beige central. The tones were too warm and fleshy for my taste.

I haven’t talked much about this project over the past few weeks but have shown a few sneak peaks on Instagram and on this post. I’ll share each of the details and projects in this room through out the week, but today I wanted to cut right to the before and after!

Guest bathroom before and after makeover shots.

This guest bedroom and bathroom are the least used in our home {because it has the smaller bed}. So, when it will be used, I envision it will be by our nieces. Therefore, I made the space a little bolder and more colorful and playful than other rooms in our house. The same holds true for the bathroom.  The bold blue vanity is painted with Country Chic Paint Midnight Sky {I’ll do a full tutorial later this week}.

Here is everything I updated in the bathroom (you can click any of the links below to read more about that particular project or link to items I purchased):

  • Painted the vanity {Country Chic Paint Midnight Sky}
  • Framed out the mirror with crown molding {from Lowe’s} – painted Behr Swiss Coffee in Semi-Gloss
  • Added two DIY no-sew curtain panels with additional accent fabric {Target curtain panels with Kravet Jonathan Adler Limitless in Marine chevron fabric}
  • Hung “art” {Old pictures I had taken in Italy that used to be in our last guest bedroom}
  • Hung sunburst mirrors {Threshold for Target}
  • Accessorized with the vase and greenery {Threshold for Target vase and Michael’s greenery}
  • Replaced hardware on the vanity {from Lowe’s but reminded me of the much pricier Lugarno Pull from Restoration Hardware}
  • Added fresh white towels {Nate Berkus for Target}
  • Swapped out the light fixture {Lowe’s}
  • Added a white bath mat rug {Nate Berkus for Target}

This makeover rang in at just over $150 using affordable updates and shopping for items around our home. I still need to give the walls a fresh coat of paint {likely a light gray or the Behr Castle Path I used in the adjoining bedroom}. One of these days we’ll replace the nasty Corian counters {you can see just how badly they’ve worn in four years in a lot of these photos}. The small changes I made have gone a long ways!

The cute bright blue vanity in our guest bathroom really pops.

As you may remember, the guest bedroom itself received some much needed updates last year. You can read more about that process here. You can see I tried to keep the color scheme the same throughout the two rooms since they are adjoined. The blue on the vanity is almost a dead ringer for the blue headboard.

What a difference paint, lighting and window treatments make. Our guest room looks so much larger after the update.

Later this week I’ll share the tutorials on painting the cabinets, updating the light fixture, framing out the mirror and modifying the plain Target curtains to create fun new shower curtains. I love that the blah, beige bathroom is almost gone for good!
