It’s that time of year again! Time to start thinking about the lovely plants and flowers you’ll be using in your planters and yard this year! I have a pretty regular rotation of annuals I use that I know thrive in our hot and humid summers. But, I always love finding additional options to add into the garden mix! It’s also fun to find unique ways to pot everything.
Today I’m sharing inspiration and front porch planter ideas. I’ve rounded up some of my favorite looks from around the web to share. This is an easy way to add instant curb appeal to your home and I always get so much joy seeing my flowers blooming! Now I just need multiple porches so I can implement more of these knockout looks!

Front Porch Planter Ideas
This first image is a stunner! I love the blue Dutch door, painted Behr Greek Isles, and brick stoop. Paired with fresh citrus trees and geraniums, the color combo is brilliant! I also love the idea of mixing wicker baskets with terra cotta planters for an overall look that’s sweet and charming. These scalloped edge moss planters have a very similar vibe and effect!
Simple boxwood topiaries are a beautiful sculptural element for year-round color.
Rather than having all of the flowers “match” in your planters, try this knockout look where each planter is filled with one type of flower. The pink geraniums, petunias, and purple lobelias look so beautiful paired with the dramatic turquoise front door!
If you have several steps leading to your front door, trying layering similar or identical plants for visual organization on each step. I love these blue hydrangeas
I mentioned I typically have a set list of flowers I buy and below is one of my typical decorative front porch planters. Since the porch faces north and is covered, it’s in the shade most of the day. This particular year I did a mix of a large palm tree in the center along with a mix of shade loving plants. The plants include impatiens, coleus, asparagus grass, and creeping jenny.
This next set of layered planters is fairly monotone, but still packs a punch. I love the topiaries paired with white petunias. The mix of galvanized metal and terra cotta planters is also a beautiful choice!
This next set of planters is definitely more spring focused, but the color combination would be great to use for summer planters as well! I love the mix of ferns, tulips, pansies and ivy!
I love this bold green front door paired with a bit more nature inspired wild plants. The dramatic purple salvia paired with varying shades of green is so beautiful!
This simple pair of potted trees is another idea that’s easy to put into action. The best part is, as the trees grow larger, you could transplant them to your yard. The green leaves look so good against the white board and batten home!
It’s basically my dream to someday be able to have citrus trees. Which means I’ll likely have to move out of Omaha 😉 But how gorgeous is this charming cobalt blue front door paired with satsuma mandarin topiaries and orange and yellow zinnias, lantanas, and cosmos?! I also love that the cobalt glazed pots coordinate so well with the front door!
This next set of refined porch planters also includes boxwoods, but I like the addition of colorful flowers around the base (I believe they’re impatiens?). The planters are also the perfect shade of blue, and could be an easy DIY project with some left over lumber!

You can have citrus trees in Nebraska!
You just have to plant them in pots that you can accommodate indoors over the winter.
They sell dwarf varieties,
I’m planning to get a dwarf meyer lemon tree for my mom for Christmas.
I’m scouting the “perfect” pot right now.
