Filling the {Upstairs} Void

Room Makeovers + Design Plans

Several weeks back, I had the TV taken out of my office {it was basically set in there during the move and then never left}. The reality is, I don’t watch any TV. I had it moved to my craft room for morning workouts I was doing religiously up until my wisdom teeth got pulled {I wasn’t allowed to workout for a week after}. The TV looks ridiculous in there on the desktop, but it works for now.

With the TV moved, I had my husband help me move the stand up to an empty void in our upstairs. Here was the space previously. Filled with a lone ottoman that had no home.

{the view walking out of our master bedroom}
{an up-close shot of the area – and yes, the cats think it is perfectly safe to sit on the end caps – and even the railing posts}
{the view when you  come out of the king guest bedroom or  get to the top of the stairs and face the queen guest bedroom}

As you can see, this is a pretty noticeable area in our upstairs and it was looking very vanilla. For unknown reasons, this location also happens to be the only area in the entire upstairs that has a cable outlet. The former owners had a little computer desk station set up there. But we had other plans.

The Wi-Fi in our home had been housed in my office and hooked to my computer. Great for me, but not so much for the rest of the house. Once we moved the credenza up, my husband pulled some of the backing to feed the wires and house our modem. It is AMAZING how much better signal we get throughout the house {even my office seems faster even though my desktop tower is operating on Wi-Fi rather than directly to the modem}.

Here is the space now. I plan to paint the credenza {a gray color?} because the black is just too heavy. The accessories are just a quick filler for now, but already, it is a huge improvement.

Notice the new view from this angle includes the board and batten we completed last weekend. I just need to paint it now – I finished all the caulking and nail filling on Monday on my day off. I love that the grid shape of the wall is mirrored in the railings.  I need to find something for the wall to the left of the bedroom door as well.

The mirror is a cheapie $30 clearance item from TJ Maxx from a year or two ago that weighs three billion pounds. It seems better propped up than ripping holes in my walls. I have read some techniques about aging/graying wood {I believe with vinegar or ammonia?} that I may try. I think it could look cool. And obviously I have yet to use Windex on the thing.

I love this print I got from Etsy sell ohmydeer for $8. I’ve had it since our last home and love the watercolor effect and quote. This may be the perfect spot for it.

Although these little updates are not entirely permanent, I think they are a good start and helping our home to feel a little homier and not so barren. And the best part is the update is completely functional – and allows me to read even more blogs because my internet is that much faster! I’m sure that’s exactly what my husband had intended.
