Welcome to our February Year of Change reveals! If you are new around here, each month, Commona My House, Rosa Beltran Design, Suburban Bitches and I all work on one project around our homes that we know will make a big impact come the end of the year. This month’s challenge was organization related. You can read my initial plans in this post and I’ll be sharing all the details of my project below.
This post could alternatively be titled “One Blogger’s Deep Dark Secret” but I like to keep things on a positive-note around here.  So, before we start, keep in mind this is a judgment-free post 😉
I had two areas that I drastically needed to tackle this month: my office and my craft room. Two rooms that I use frequently but had quickly both become completely disorganized. I think since they are mostly just “my” spaces I got a little lax on keeping them tidy. But, now they look SO much better!
THE OFFICE
Here’s what I started with in the office. To be honest, this is a normal scene in here. Mail gets piled up on my desk for me to review/shred/etc. and the basket that was originally dedicated to mail quickly became filled with photography equipment that wasn’t currently being used. The mail then migrated to the other side of the desk and the pile would quickly topple any time a cat wanted to hang out {so basically every five minutes}. You can see I also have an abandoned lamp, some wood I got at Haven {yes, in July} that I never moved, and my misfit fiddle fig is sitting in a pot that is about half the size it  needs to be {but helps stop any water drips}. So pretty, right?!?
In the one corner of the room, we also have a closet. When we first moved in, we added a cheapy plastic shelving unit to hold our DVDs, VHS {we still have a ton}, and CDs. It’s like the closet of decades past. After we got plantation shutters, I shoved the white silk drapes in the closet. You can see it’s also got random bits of everything around, including more photography equipment blocking the door entirely.
Classy, right?! Because I had most of the items necessary to get this room into shape, I only had to purchase one item: a long, clear acrylic tray from HomeGoods {it was $19.99}. It’s really sad it took me so long to tackle this space, given that I really only had to invest about two hours to get every thing cleaned up.
THE CRAFT ROOM
This room has recently gotten out of control. You may recall my reveal of this space for our June Year of Change project. However, with this room being mostly just for me and given that it is hidden out of site, it has become my dumping ground for seasonal decor, fabric, etc. Fortunately {or unfortunately} this because my “safety zone” away from the cats and my husband so it’s like my little locker of things I want to keep them away from. Which apparently is half the contents of our house 😉
And now, the much better afters! In the closet, I ended up using these striped totes {large size} that I had purchased some time ago. Admittedly, they are a bit busy with all the fabric, but since I had them on hand I didn’t really want to purchase something new. Please note you can now see the carpet again!
You can see I also did some serious organizing of my fabrics which was clearly needed. I found some wire baskets in the dollar bin at Target to organize miscellaneous craft paints and other items I had on hand. Organized junk looks so much better than disorganized junk.
I’ve long had this area of my closet organized, however, it seems to always get out of control again after the holidays. I love hanging all my pillow covers that aren’t in use {rather than folding them} so that next time I want to use them, I don’t have to mess with ironing. You can see I also have a lot of wreaths hung in this closet as well.
I’m definitely not one to say organization is my strong suit, but I definitely feel so much better when these frequently used spaces are clean and organized. Now, the goal is to keep these spaces this way!
Now be sure and stop by the organizational post from Commona My House, Rosa Beltran Design, and Suburban Bitches. Have a great weekend – it will be March by the time the weekend is over!

Such a great transformation! I think this happens to all of us- our space just gets out of control with clutter and before we know it, we have a huge mess on our hands. I’m in the middle of a major office cleanout/reorganization, and I’ve been posting about other small decluttering projects like this. My hall closet got the makeover this week, and it’s so pretty I keep opening the door just to admire how clean it is 🙂 Have a great weekend!

After work I’m heading home to get my craft room pulled back together!! 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration!

I too have lots of fabric that needs to stay organized yet available to use daily. I’ve found that folding and hanging each piece works best for me. Thanks for the idea to hang wreaths … I never thought of that!!

Girl you did good! Way to tackle those spaces and make them look so pretty! Josh and I have a whole bedroom we just kind of avoid organizing. We need to get on it.

Ah, I am taking big deep breath for you! There is nothing better than finally tackling that dark corner and finally having it off your list! Congrats!

Great job! It’s so easy to get overwhelmed by the messes when we’re SO busy, but I know you feel so much better now that your spaces are beautiful and functional again. (Applause!)

I call my craft room my “crap” room because it’s where I stash everything. I then have to clear a corner of the desk to make a simple card. I like to think I am a “messy creative type”. You too?
