We pretty much change our minds on a weekly basis if we should finish our basement or not. It mostly comes down to us deciding on a floor plan. We plan to do most of the work ourselves if possible to keep costs down. Today I found a cool tool at floorplanner.com and decided to give it a shot. Here is what we have to work with {floorplan is from our builder so ours is exactly flip-flopped}. Its basically an open expanse of nothing right now. Ours is currently a “partially finished” basement meaning we had our builders frame, insulate and hang drywall on all exterior walls in the area below marked “finished lower level”. This would save us a lot of time and money if we opt to go forward.
And here is the plan I came up with today. I only placed furniture to gauge room size {the beds are queen measurements} and to show what the rooms use was – I also need to add closets still. The middle room with the french doors would either be an office for the husband or a workout room. We have two windows above ground so decided to make both areas bedrooms for resale purposes {all the two-stories in our neighborhood are five bedrooms and we currently only have three}. I LOVE that this free software does a 2D and 3D view of your rooms. I recommend trying this out if you are looking to design a room{s}.
Time will tell if we actually ever finish our basement. Regardless if we do or don’t this was actually a fun exercise {although, keep in mind that my third grade old self used to draw floor plans on graph paper for fun} – so consider the source!
